Hey there everyone. I am new to this site, just thought I would join and maybe get a few ideas for a build I have got started. Right now I have just got a DPMS LR-308 lower receiver, DPMS LPK, and a 4 pound single stage Timney drop in trigger. I am not exactly sure what caliber I am going to go with and would like any ideas or feedback that you all are willing to provide. I have built quite a few AR-15's, but this is going to be my first AR-10. The end result for this rifle that I would like to achieve is for long range shooting. Thanks for the help.
You will be better off not to go below a 243 on the frame you have. It does not have enough mag angle to feed with the smaller cal stuff. Different frames have different mag angles making things easier to deal with. You need to move the gas port forward 3 to 4 inches on the 260 and 243 to keep the speed up and the timming in a sweet spot. The short mags are in the same boat on the mag angle, So everything on a 308 case works well with the 243 being the smallest that I go with on the DPMS and Rem frames. Mag angle is a factor in helping to get the bullet pointed in the center of the chamber. The feed ramps don't do it all.MSH
First off, welcome to the site...I am sure you will find all the info you need to help you and I hope you become a active member as well....welcome aboard...
MSH is one of our top techs (ok he is the top tech...LOL) anyway he knows what is good and what works...but I will add...being that you have a DPMS lower...remember you will have to stay to that platform...it won't interchange with the AR-10..ArmaLite.
But you have a wide array of options so ask away...
Oh we do have a DPMS category, so you might want to start there and post up your question there as to better suit the topic...
thanks..

I do know that DPMS and ArmaLite are not interchangeable, so at least I won't make that mistake, that I'm sure many have. I was thinking about going with a 300 SAUM or a 325 WSM. Would either of those be a better choice over the standard 308 WIN in terms of long distance shooting with sub MOA accuracy? Also, are the mags difficult to find for other calibers or can you modify a standard mag to work?
Stay off the WSMs and SAUMs with the frame you have the mag angle give to much trouble. Any 308 base case is OK. If it were an Armalite frame the WSMs would be OK. Less work to make it reliable.MSH
If you are trying to keep the costs as low as possible the 308 will offer the most options. After all it is the "standard" offering. Custom calibers usually cost more.
Perhaps you can let us know why you are considering other calibers?
