ar10....what to buy was created by mlasare
I am new to this forum as well as unfamiliar with tacticals so I need some advise. I am looking for a 200 yard tactical and was considering Armalite vs DPMS. First off....do I need forward assist and a dust cover? this is for hunting so I thougt yes...also..is a match trigger important? what about magazines? I am considering the ARMALITE more because the magazine format, dust cover and forward assist are standard. Would a carbine suffice? Ive read a 16" barrel would shoot like a 30/30...is this true? what about the forehand? will aluminum freefloat be too cold in winter shooting? alot of questions...please help me decide. thanks in advance for your input!
Also....I was considering a millett TRS=1 scope but read some poor reviews...do I really need to spend $1000 on a leupold scope? I would like the illuminated mildot or similar.
Do I need an adjustable stock?

:) First off, what are you going to with it? To use the scope you described at 200yds is literaly point blank range with the AR-10 as the rifle is designed for 600+yds. See if you can find a 'hand me down' scope and play with it for a while. A 3x9, or 4x12 will serve you well. The AR-10 platform is more recent than the AR-15 and the ArmaLite version has a greater commonality of parts with the AR-15 more so than with any other brand. The Armalite AR-10 uses converted magazines from the M-14 rifle and sells conversion kits (should there be a need in the future). ArmaLite sells a bullet proof one piece scope mount that puts the scope at the same eye level as the iron sights and comes in 1", and 30mm rings. The AR platform is such that many people buy just the empty upper, and lower receivers and start building from there. Changing parts is what the AR series is all about. As I write this I have 'one' rifle, with 2 butt stocks, 3 uppers(A-2,(T)), and am building a National Match using a Schnieder 5 groove polygon barrel. The National Match trigger from ArmaLite is very safe and reiable but may need to be sent back to ArmaLite to be better fitted together. I clicked on your trigger word and it sent me to Brownels. I suggest that you start and get familiar with ArmaLites then go from there. The NM and the Tacticle trigggers use the same exact parts, they are just configured differantly. Now, what was the question??
Tom

Why don't you get a DPMS SASS. You can get one for $1200 and they generaly shoot MOA. Order it from DPMS and have a 2 stage trigger put in it and they will ship it to your gun shop as a prepayed item. That makes it easy. They have an 18" barrel and a free float tube already on them and all the other goodies. The referance to the 16" barrel and the 30-30 is close but what happens is that the 308s speed loss is so drastic that it is very close to a 30-30 in bullet speed with that short of a barrel. It dosen't hurt anything but just slow. If the 30-30 had been around 15 years eariler the west would have looked very different today. I've seen R-guns with $1100 adds in the shotgun news.MSH
