Greetings,

a little background. (maybe a little too much actually)

My name's Ken. My family is currently living in Mississippi and I'm enjoying several run and cokes, so I apologize in advance if my extensive dependence on hooked on phonics fails somewhere along the course of our conversations =). I med retired from active duty Army, W.O.C-D back in 94.

A couple months ago we had a pack of coyotes come in our yard, we had to stand by, helplessly, and watch them -in front of our picture window, destroy three of our family pets, with my 2 and 6 year old daughters screaming as it was happening. My wife was religiously anti gun right up until that moment. It rang home and I think my wife realized, it would have been even worse, the kids could have been in the back yard instead of the house, and what if it were armed intruders instead. After cleaning up the mess, the very next morning, as a family we went and purchased a S&W MP,AR-15, along with an inexpensive Turkish made 20 semi auto shotgun. Determined to take back the night, I also ordered a couple ATN gen 1.5 nvg's, some IR floods & started downloaded electronic calls.

I purchased the AR based on my military training (certified just shy of hawk eye out of brm). I bought the shotgun for my wife, we joined the local gun club. I had the local club members intro/teach my wife shotgun on the trap range. The following weekend, I gave my wife an hour lesson on the AR.. six shots in -she called out.. "it has way less kick, way more control" "I'm shooting this one, not the shotgun, you'll just have to share it." After getting her centered at 25 & 50 yards, with her shooting .5 min, I mentioned that sharing guns isn't like sharing a bed, its more like sharing a toothbrush, we'd have to move everything, and it wont be quick especially if the situation were to demand speed, we need another wep.

Having been on army range duty, and seeing only dimples in 450yrd targets surrounded by lots and lots of fully formed bullets along the target bases, I started looking for an equally accurate, semi- auto, with more reach and impact. After almost being suckered at the local pawn shop into a Rugar mini 30, I found the AR-10. It seems like it hits all the sweet spots but then found older blogs(3yr old posts) with info that casts it with a history of issues.

After lurking your website for a week and looking into allot guns that I have no training with, I thought it might be time to ask for some clarification from the folks that really shoot them frequently and are up to speed with the facts.

I'm assuming -in every sense of Benny Hill's definition-, that the new generation of magazines have fixed the jamming/reliability issues? is it safe to say that they no longer require allot of specialized tweaking? a new gun should be as reliable as my wifes new S&W mp ar15?

I'd like to hold down costs so I can afford quality scopes for both rifles and still afford a start in reloading. So far, ranked on cost I've tentatively narrowed my choices which I'll list fist to last, based only on price.(I'm wife approved to buy but I don't want to abuse the blessing)

R-25
DPMS SASS rguns
armalite 10TBNF (forward assist?)
armalite Super SASS Rifle, .308 sniper country px (-no flip up iron?)

Well Ken, welcome to our happy home....Sorry to hear about your misfortune with the pets...I know it would be hard for me to do that...as well...
Your choice on the MP-15 is a good one, I know several people that own them, and have served them well...
On you choices on the .308, well being "wife approved" That is really up to you...any one of those would do the job...I would say for what you are looking for...The DPMS, might be to your liking but you also might look at the AR-10 A4..as for the mags on the Gen II, I have had no issues with mine at all...
On the M-21...well for me that would be more than I need...but they are one hell of a gun...
Those optics that you showed, I have not heard of them...the site I have...not bought anything yet, but their catalog make good reading material...
So I hope you can take care of your varmint problem...Just remember to watch where you shoot at night...especially with the .308
I hope this has been of some help...and I am sure others will chime in....
Again welcome to AR10T...

awesome, thanks for the reply,

The predator problem will work its self out. I'm really not looking to purchase a 308 just to deal with it. the fully choked shotgun will prob get the job done there. The chain of events really more or less served as a catalyst to get back into shooting. I'd like to find something that I can take to the range that I can build skills with and challenge me long term while having hunting and defense potential.

I'm a little concerned that I might inadvertently buy something where the equipment would be the bottle neck. If I bought a 2k + item and then have to turn around a buy again just to get it right, I'd been in hot water with the misses.

my gun list was my attempt to narrow the field. There seems like a decent price gap between the items on the list. I was hoping I could get a little info such as super sass is only a little more that y but super sass has an upgraded ___. or don't spend $ on xyz, ABC is easier to upgrade.

Coyotes are very smart. I had a problem with them that comes around every 2 years or so. These eastern yots are bigger and bolder than the western ones. My boys wolf has on use for them. This pack around here ate my ageing springer. I went coyote fishing. I hung some meat on a shark hook about 40" in the air and I left the yote hung there for all to see until he guit stinking, and then I did it again. I notice that they changed their travel patterns but about every 2 years a few uneducated ones come back. I caught one big one and put him in the wolfs puppy harness and tied him to the tree and let the bull have at it while the pack watched. They aint been back in over 2 years. I tried calling but looks like the word is out in coyote land around here for now. The wild turkeys are back and the deer are doing well. The wolf is thinking retirement. My buddy in CO imported a cheetah and we hunted them with the cat out there. That was the funnest thing I've every seen. The coyotes cain't beleave the speed of that thing. Not the average house cat but a very friendly pet that works the ranch with him. That thing has feet like a dog. My buddy has a bunch of that African game out there. The coyotes are a problem nation wide and I don't see a way of getting them all. The fox hunters started using them because the gave their dogs a better run about 15 years ago and to many of them got away and thats where out problem come from.MSH

Welcome to the site. Like the others I am sorry about your situation, especially that the kids saw part or all of it.
As for a .308, all I have ever owned is Armalite and I have always been very happy. I have heard about the mag issues but have never experienced any issues with any 10, 20, or 25 round mags. If you don't mind the additional weight, I would recommend the Super SASS. My second choice would be the current AR10-T. Both guns come from the factory with a 20" stainless steel triple lapped barrel. After going through the recommended break-in and I began shooting groups, I have always been able to keep sub 1/2" groups at 100 yards with the guns right out of the box. Of course, good optics definately help. My choice is either Swarovski or Trijicon accupoint, but there are a lot of other good scopes as well. Hope this helps.

Well Ken, if I am reading your last post right....

For what you will spend on a SUPER SASS...you could buy an AR-10 A4 and have enough for a scope and upgrades...but don't get me wrong..if I had the cash...I would at least own the upper...
If you want easy...then DPMS or the R-25 would be the route to go...if you want military quality (if there is such a thing  )
then go with the one that has been around for decades and be prepared to work for what you build....
I hope this is the answer you where looking for...

wow, thanks for the replies.

so it sounds like if I would like to have the accuracy the 20" ss barrel is one of the primary key components to shooting less than an inch @100? I dont mind extra weight.

Would ordering a dmps sass with a 20" instead of the 18" produce that level of consistency?

I'm thinking the Armalite SuperSass price might leave me with with some post purchase regrets. With that in mind, I'm trying to distinguish/ understand the differences between the AR10-T and AR-10A4 SST.
Would it be correct to guess that the floated hand guard on the 10-T is whats allowing armalite to guarantee its more accurate out of the box? I also noticed the 10t didn't have a flash suppresor, is that something that effects accuracy?

I was thinking Trijicon accupoint for scope, especially after seeing Tacklebarry's post. I stopped in the local sporting good store today looking for an accupoint. They didnt have one, but had a Burris Eliminator, the manager suggested it would be a good scope to learn / estimate ranges & drop while giving immediate feedback. It had some cool tech but thought I check with you all, to see if it has real merit. It was about the price of the Trijicon..

mmsshh, I'd bet my wife would jump on the chance to own a cheetah, she's a real cat person, one of the cats killed was a f2 savanah, which was part Serval, an african planes cat . I just don't think the litter box could support Chetah type damage  The Coyot fishing is tempting, but traps and poison are too indiscriminating for our location. I'd hate to catch our neighbors championship blood hound instead of the coyot.

The hooks work very well. I blew them off at first but anything to get even with those 4 legged guts. I'm supprized that the Savanahs speed and jumping ability didn't get him up a tree fast. You need to call and shoot from a high place then.MSH

a deal. I paid $2200.00 for my Super SASS and it had the Trijicon 3x9x40 Accupoint attached by a Armalite one piece scope mount. It was from a local gun shop and the gun only had three rounds through it. It was as new!
I will be receiving a Trijicon 5x20x50 Accupoint on Thrusday that I am going to mount on the gun. I am putting the 3x9 on an AR-15.
Bottom line, keep yoour eyes open. Put up WTB adds. The economy is still crap. You can let the buyers set their price and still get some great deals.

holy cow! some of the best advice is the stuff that makes you stop, and maybe even a little mad, that you didn't think of it first. allot like that whole Isaac Newton gravity thing.
