Please tell me I'm ok and don't have anything to worry about.... My Armalite AR10 has 7.62 stamped on the receiver, and I have already put about 150 rounds of .308 Win through it. Can I continue shooting the .308 Winchester ammo or switch to 7.62 only and stay with that?
It can be confusing.
I reload a lot, and I run 7.62 brass through a .308 die and it shoots accurately with no problem, so I don't think the differences are big. If I remember correctly, some 308 loads have higher pressures than 7.62 rounds, but I have never heard any factory warnings.
The Armalite website for FAQ's is a really handy resorce. So also is there technical bulletin library. I learned a lot by reading those. So how is your Armalite shooting?
FRIGGIN AWESOME!!! I dialed it in with the Hornady 150 grain SST rounds. I can cover up the group with a quarter at 100 yards. She is dialed in for 200. Now I'm just waiting for our rifle part of deer season to open.
It's a SAMI thing about pressures and all. 7.62 might be a hotter load depending, but if it's off the shelf, then .308 is generally softer shooting than 7.62 NATO stuff. Cartridge wise they are identical except for wall thickness of the case.
The cartridges are not loaded to different pressure levels. The shorter throat on the .308 spec chambers *may* cause a spike in chamber pressure when the bullet from a 7.62 NATO loaded cartridge jams into the rifling sooner than it would in a NATO spec chamber.
Even then, the spike in pressure isn't generally enough to cause a problem unless your bolt lugs are already cracked or there's something else seriously wrong.
