Hello all!
I'm new to AR10's. In fact, I don't yet own one. Which is what brings me here. I'm looking for some kind of quick reference chart or something similar that I can use to sort out all the non-standardization issues with AR10 models, mags, and manufacturers before I buy.
My main problem is I live in Connnecticut and I really don't have the luxury of time to sufficiently educate myself. It's pretty much guaranteed that the existing ban here will soon be expanded to included anything that isn't a bolt action or a BB gun. This has forced me to scramble around to complete a wish list I've had for decades in a effort to be afforded the protection of a grandfather clause.

I currently looking at several lowers, but I have no idea what mags are compatible with them and what other issues will arise when I attempt to find matching uppers. (Right now I am simply concerned with obtaining lowers since I am working within budget constraints and I already have some AR15 projects going.)

Any help would be appreciated.

I know you are in a bit of a crunch but take your time, do some digging within the forum and older posts to help you find what you are looking for and when you have questions, feel free to throw em out there.

We've got some incredibly knowledgeable members and mods who are always happy to help and can normally steer you in a very good direction for your needs.

First, welcome to the forum.

I understand the confusion from the lack of standardization with .308 ARs. In broad strokes, .308 ARs break down into three broad catagories - Armalite pattern, Knight's Armament pattern and RRA.

Armalite's AR10B series is the most common from this maker. The AR10B has a couple of refinements to the bolt, lower receiver and the barrel nut to increase the reliability and longevity of the rifle. The magazine used is a modified M14 magazine. Recently, Armalite introduced a model they call the AR10A, which accepts the original pattern Stoner magazine.

Knight's Armament Corp. has become the de facto standard due to it's limited use by the US military (The SR25 and M110 SASS are made by them.) Reed Knight was a close friend of Gene Stoner's and his rifles closely adhere to the original 1950's AR10 design and magazine. Other companies following this pattern are LMT, LaRue, DPMS/Bushmaster/Remington, Smith and Wesson, CMMG, Sig (piston), LWRCi (piston), and POF-USA (piston), among others.

RRA produces it LAR-308 based on an older Bushmaster design from the mid-90's. It uses modified FAL magazines.

Because of proprietary parts, uppers and lowers cannot be interchanged between the three designs.

Otherwise, when looking at the specs of individual rifles use the same judgement you would use when looking for a quality AR15 as it pertains to materials used, coatings and included accessories.

Thanks for the info! You've provided me with a good frame of reference to start with. I was looking at an EagleArms 7.62 upper/lower combo. It has no forward assist, so I'm assuming it would be an older version?

If it's the Eagle Arms I'm thinking of, it's an Armalite pattern rifle. Eagle was/is Armalite's economy brand. Eagle's take the modified M14 mag that Armalite uses. It's also a slick sided rifle (no external forward assist.)

I didn't buy the Eagle Arms peices, but I did score a complete Armalite AR10(T) lower tonight. Paid dearly for it, but the CT legislature is predicting a vote by the end of next week. Whatever happens, it shouldn't kick in until July, but I'm not taking any chances.

Edit: I read a post here that said Armalite sells a mag conversion kit that will make metric FAL mags work in a 10B. (The T is 10B model if I understand correctly) Anybody familiar with this?

The only conversion kit from Armalite that I know of is the M14 mag conversion kit. Not saying there might not be some, only that I've never seen them.

And congrats on the new lower. Was it a fixed stock model or collapsible?

ArmaLite only has 2 models in the "A" series currently and only made them for two years now. So the model you have is most likely the "B" series and uses either the GEN I (modified M14 mags) or the GEN II mags.

The "B" series does not use the P-mag. But you actually have more options with the lower you have. With true 5, 10, and 15 round magazines, since i belive your state has magazine restriction laws.

Now for the big questions...

What do you want the rifle to do?
Are you going to use it for shot range or long range shooting?
Do you want presision or or every day shooter?

Some of this will help in deciding what upper you might want to go with and what options you might have.

Agree. In addition to the various upper assemblies that Armalite offers, Noveske builds .308 Uppers on the Armalite pattern.

I did some checking and I guess the "T" designation is a reference to the fully assembled version the lower came from. It's simply a 10B with a full length match grade target barrel. It has an old school A1 style stock. We can't have folding or telescoping stocks here unless they are semi-permanently pinned in fully extended position.


We currently have no mag restrictions, but our governor and several members of legislature have been pushing a hicap ban agenda for several years with no success. Since the Newtown incident, they feel they now have the ammunition they need. (pun intended) If the gov gets his way, we will have to turn in or sell out of state anything over 10 round capacity or face felony charges. No mention of modifying them to hold only ten rounds.

As for the build, I'm leaning toward medium to long range.
