So I'm completely new to this, even new to being on any forums at all, Just got back from Afghanistan, need some answers before I spend some money. Figured some people on here could help me out. I have a AR-10(T) obviously, and have been considering putting one of the Armalite AR10T carbine uppers on it, and then also throw a collapsible stock on the back of it. One of the SF guys I was deployed with, told me that only military grade 7.62 ARs are capable of firing rapid fires without eventually putting stress fractures in the weapon system. I really just want a weapon system I can take long shots with,(hence my 20" bbl) and then when the situation calls for it, put on a different upper, and do some urban training with. Any thoughts if that is a practicle solution or will multiple double shots and triples start to take their toll on my weapon system. I have alot of respect for SF guys obviously, but as with most of us combat arms soldiers, the Army teaches us alot about how to use weapons, not as much about what they can tolerate, and/or advance care for them THanks for any imput

Welcome aboard and thank you for your service! :usa:
I've never heard of any stress factors. The big issue with rapid fire as I understand it is losing accuracy from heat damage.

This Armalite tech note lays out what they recommend as far as firing rate goes. They have tech notes for about every question.
Hope this helps.

Swapping uppers to suit your needs is both practical and a good way to eventually wind up with 2 complete weapons on a budget. At some point, a lower for the spare upper will become a priority, and that's never a bad thing.
I can't speak for your SF dudes experience but I have never personally heard of an AR10 fracturing from rapid fire. Maybe he broke an XM110 and figured everything else was less than that, in which case he would be wrong. KAC really pulled a fast one dumping those on the Army. I can't speak for the other brands out there, but ArmaLite is good to go. I let my kids do a mag dump out of mine for fun. It was a one time thing, to preserve the barrel throat, not out of fear of breaking anything. If I had a chrome lined barrel and the ammo budget I would have no concerns about blasting away.

As far as any advanced care, just follow standard lube order and cleaning. I run all my gas guns pretty wet, an old habit. The most common reports of failures with these is low quality ammo, and gas block misalignment. They do tend to be overgassed and many shooters will opt for an adjustable gas block.

Hey ThankYou very much gentlemen, it is good to be home, and thanks for welcoming me to this forum. I sincerely appreciate the info, I'll be buying an AR upper as soon as I can get it ordered, sadly though inlight of recent events I'm sure everything is back ordered now. I know that the mags are already backed up, I can't imagine the wait on an upper. I'm guessing my buddy was assuming civilain models weren't made for combat, which I guess I kinda understand only because those guys fire tons and tons of rounds in training, on the other hand, often the governments equipment is made by the cheapes bidder. either way, I'm glad I was correct and you guys helped confirm that for me. Untill we talk again

I'm not all about decieving my wife.lol, but that's a great point you make of getting another lower, as a back up, all the sudden I have two great rifles, and I didn't even have to break the bank, or tell my wife why I feel it's smart to buy another entire rifle.lol Genius!!!

Wives can be funny about stuff J but try what I did. Take her shooting, use some lighter loads so it doesn't kick her but and see how she likes it.

If things don't get TOO bad with the bans, I'll be getting her an Armalite M15 in 7.62 x 39 right after the first of the year and HOPEFULLY before I can't get any more.

She enjoys shooting now and DOES see the need for good equipment so that gets me a little leeway when it comes to buyin stuff when we can swing it.

Looking forward to seeing you posting and feel free to use our links to sites whenever you are looking because everything you buy THRU one of our portals, a % goes to keeping the site running with no additional cost to you.

I was 11B myself back in the early 80s so like I said, always glad to have other GIs around. :)

Back when I had a wife, I always provided support proportionate to what was needed. When she wanted to get into scrap booking and cut up $12 a sheet paper into little shapes...OK, hello Nightforce. Of course, since the kids love going shooting with dad, they needed stuff too. When done right, one AR can sort of morph into 3-4 complete weapons. spare barrels need uppers, uppers need lowers, and I still have a box of stocks and grips and gas tubes not doing anything.

Oh God.. I'm a junkie..

yea, Sharkey,, I think I am going to do that, I've already told her I'm going to train her how to use an M4 type rifle, she's afraid of the "behemouth" AR10, but she's a bit smaller so I'll give her that. I really dont even think she'd be "OK" with a 5.56. I thought about eventually using that as an excuse to buy a regular AR-15 carbine, and switching in a .22 upper,, kinda breaking her in easy like. She loves her Marlin model 60, but it's pretty hard to get her to shoot anything bigger. I think that'll do the trick though, and then I'll put the 5.56 upper back on when she's ready.
THe Good thing, (as you implied 13Fcolt),, I let her buy all sorts of sewing patterns, and cooking things she said she was dying to have, while I was away, so now that I'm back, it's my turn to spend some of that money on me.LOL I just need to get her to love shooting as much as I do.

I didn't know about the links to other sites, very good to know.
Thanks for the advice gentlmen.

I think the key for getting my wife into stuff bud was to decrease what I would expect of anyone else and just let her learn to enjoy pulling the trigger on the range, not keep the targets too far out to start and let her find her niche.

Once she was ok with shooting the rifle itself, THEN she wanted to start becoming better at it.

Heck, I've even had her shooting skeet with my Benelli M4 a couple of times and now she's up to hip firing #1 buck and can unload 9 shells pretty darn fast when she's in the mood to.

Also, my wife is only 5'1 and about 115lbs and we are BOTH 49 years old so if you just take your time and let your wife see if she's going to enjoy it on her own without TOO much coaching other than just keeping her safe, who knows, maybe you'll get lucky like I did.

My wife is a damn good sport about stuff and sometimes I'll go down to the ocean surf casting all night and she likes knowing that she can effectively engage targets with pretty much anything we have in the house if she needs to. Our boys are 7 and 9 so she keeps a pretty sharp ear when I'm out all night and feels a lot better knowing she can repel unsavory types... :)
