Just took the neighbor lunch and we had a good talk. He is a WWII veteran and retired priest, I asked him why he became a priest and replied that he had seen all the evils in this world (and still doesn't like to talk about it) and all he had to offer, and the only way he could find to overcome it was with the good. (With tears welling up in his eyes)
I try to imagine all he had been through in his life the Great Depression WWII, now as I grow older, I understand why they are called the Greatest of all generations. What a privilege it is to have him as a neighbor!
We in the generations that follow, I pray truly that we fully understand and never forget the sacrifices of those that came before us.
They are dying off pretty quick and very few of them are left. So, make it a point to give a veteran a visit, and you will learn. (History) I hope and pray it never repeats itself.
Spend quality time with your neighbor Akai and appreciate every minute he spends with you. The old friends (who were vets)that I had in my area have all passed now.
There is only man that goes to my church, not a veteran, but he even knew my Great Great grandparents when he was a boy and was friends with my Great Grandfather and grandfather as well. When he is gone, the links to my line, other than direct blood, will be all gone.
We sit sometimes and talk on Sundays and my sons always shake his hand and sit with me while we do.
I pray that when he goes, he'll be able to tell my ancestors about my wife and boys - and they'll be proud.
