Bought a new "old stock" SASS. Working through the barrel break in process and I am really not happy with the grouping so far. Working with multiple ammo variants to see what seems to run best. Function is flawless, but grouping, as I said, is not what I would have expected. After 24 rounds, the best I can do is about 2" @ 100 yds. Cold bore shot was spot on in the red. Then she lands right for a really nice 3 round group. Then the final shot is high. Shooting from a bi-pod and an accu-shot monopod. Best group was with Federal 168 gr match king. Should I expect the grouping to tighten up as the break in goes along?
My sass does not play well with factory loaded 168's, particularly fgmm. I've been searching too for something flatter shooting than I get with the 175smk and aint found it yet. I think they made the sass around the 175.
It's been awhile since I've messed with it, but if I recall my issue was the factory loaded 168s sit too far off the lands. If you have the means, gauge your free bore and compare it to the ammo.
Or just try a box of 175. the ogive sits a little closer. That is what clued me in when I was first searching for what she likes.
Chamber looks good. Muzzle crown is hard to see with the flash supresser on. I see some irregular coloration on the crown when looking down through the supressor. Probably warrants removing for a closer look. Barrel looks perfect.
If you feel confident that ammo can be eliminated as the cause and the barrel looks good, next double check to see if there is any shifting around with the scope, inside and out.
Not to question your skills, try modifying your technique a bit. try a bag instead of the bipod. try supporting the stock with the weak hand and loosening up a bit on the pistol grip.
hopefully we can get this worked out without the need to contact armalite coming into it.
Didn't make it to the range Saturday or Sunday. Got called in to work instead...ammo money! Had a bit of a revelation today. Got thinking about your last reply 13fcolt. Not so much technique, but conditions. The bottom of my monopod on my PRS stock is convex. The tables at my club are wood and the grain is pretty washed out from wear. If I drag the stock from side to side, my elevation can vary by more than moa. If I pull the trigger a bit or flinch on a shot, this could be really exaggerating the grouping problem. Going to try a smooth plate under the monopod to see if things get tighter.
