To All of you gurus and hardcore shooters,

What books and or field manuals do you guys LIVE by when it comes to shooting? Although I've received a lot of training through the course of several different positions I've held, I have found that at 49 years old, I don't have a single book or FM that my wife and kids OR I, look through when they want to read a bit about shooting.

I am not talking about stories, I'm talking about shooting guides that can be learned from.

Since most of my training with a rifle was also done in the Army more than 25 years ago, and then most of my "real life" training and experience was with handguns and shotguns, I'm sure my "rifle shooting" could use some fine tuning when it comes to really gaining that extra bit for those longer shots OTHER than just practicing.

Maybe a solid list of these guides, FM and instructional books in this forum would be a very good reference guide for a lot of people who would also like to step up to a higher level of expertise and knowledge as well.

What have you got guys?

Thanks all and happy shooting.

Good shooting, whether at CQB distances or 1000 yards, is all about executing the same fundamental skill set. FM 3-22.9, Army Marksmanship, is the foundation for all my shooting. For long range precision shooting, John Plaster's updated "The Ultimate Sniper" is pretty comprehensive.

If you've got the time and the scratch, I'd also recommend taking a class.

Never too late bud. Info is good no matter what day it arrives. My oldest son (9) loves this stuff and reads everything. If it wasn't for his younger brother wanting to watch other stuff, he'd fall asleep every night watching the military channel.

I also read everything we come across and then when my wife get's time, I'll let her read some of the more important stuff about sight picture, grip, breathing and anything I feel will make her shooting more fun without being a drag. She likes it all but I've found it's better not to ram it down her throat and bog her down with stuff and just stick to the simpler aspects that improve her skills and yet don't bore her to death. I think it's good when she sees things that I have worked with her on also written in articles as it gives her another, less invested voice to listen to when she reads it.

Good stuff all around guys and thank all who contribute.
