If your a little more specific about what you want to do with them I bet you'll get more results. Better yet just bash a real popular one and people will pipe up about why they like it.
I got a new Bushnell 4200 elite 2.5x10 on ebay for around $200. It has been a great scope for my use,100-350 yards. I think I may even be able to stretch that out some. It is the brightest, clearest scope I've used but I have no experience with nightforce and the other high end stuff. This Bushnell seems to be everything I need. No issues holding zero or returning the turrets to zero when I adjust for windage and elevation.
I'm also thinking about an eotech or an Aimpoint but haven't pulled the trigger yet because I'm having good luck with the elite set at 2.5 so far. Any closer than 50 yds and I'm popping it off and using back up iron sights.
I dream about that Elcan with variable power but I don't gamble so the lottery won't get me one.
It all depends on the shooter. NightForce, March, some leupold and even Vortex all make great scopes. there are so many scopes and manufacturers to choose from find the application that best suits you. Make sure that you can adjust the parallax out of the scope, if not you could miss badly at even closer distances. Just my two cents.
sorry about the slow response..
IMHO AR's are more suited for compact low power scopes with Ext.Eye-Relief..
Too many (less experienced) AR handlers seek scopes with the biggest numbers and miss important aspects like charging handle access, wide field of view, rapid target acquisition.
Certainly long range paper punchers can ignore these issues because of the nature of their shooting. Just ask an experienced hunter what power his scope is set on and you may be surprised
