Hello, just purchased my first armalite and have already found they do things just a little different. I have a few questions on sight set up/optics and am interested to see what others have done.
You got an awesome RIFLE
What kind of optics you are having questions, on my AR 10T used a burris one peace mount
And started with a low end NIKON 3/9 until I safe $$$ to put a glass worth for this kind of RIFLE.
I went with a Nightforce NXS 12 x 42 in an Armalite mount. I think it may be a little too much power for my AR-10T, might swap with my BA-50, 50BMG. If that happens it will be a Bushnell Elite 6500 tactical 4.5 x 30.
Did you get a carbine or target rifle and what do you plan on using the rifle for? Self defense, hunting, target shooting, etc?
I'm sure there are everything from irons sights/red dots to benchrest scopes depending on the model and use.
Thanks guys. I will post pics when I get some free time but appreciate what you have done. I guess my first question would be about geometry or BUIS sights. This is my first jump into a rifle that has come without any sights and I want to make sure I'm on the right track. Should the front and rear sight bodies be level to each other? I purchased a set of Samson flip ups and when I was looking for tips on set up I noticed they sell to types of front sights. One for barrel mount and one for handguard mount. I got the handguard mount but I am mounting it to the gas block. They are level to each other so am I ok? or does the front need to be higher? I'd think this would make me shoot low. While on the topic of geometry, what seems to be the optimal optic height?
Welcome ADTREM! My Noveske N6 came with Troy Flip ups on a SWS float over the block quadrail that makes a continous top rail level with the reciever.. Most AR BUIS have a 1.5" off the center of the barrel height I believe. This is the same as a standard height scope mount w/out a riser installed, so your cheek weld will be the same with both sighting options. As far as BUIS issues, not sure what model you have (please let us know) but from Armalite's description of the AR10A4: "Picatinny Rail Gas Block. Top of gas block is .398 (+/- .010) lower than top of receiver." So... unless you have a model that is different than this for some reason, your gas block's rail is actually lower. But the sights themselves should be set from the factory at a 100 yard or less setting, assuming level mounting at bases. I'm not familiar with the BUIS you have bought, but I would just mount it and go to the range, set up a target at about 25-50 yards, and start firing. First just see what windage you need to change on the rear sight, left or right. See where it's hitting up or down, and adjust the front if you can't adjust your view of the front sight through the back to make the adjustment. From my experience, your height will be only a few inches either way, and how you place the front sight within the rear ring or whatever style it is will adjust the few inches either way you need for short range shots out to 100 yards or so. I think you'll see that you are real close by just mounting them and getting used to them. But yes, they are designed to be mounted level at their bases. The front adjustment for elevation is there incase you need to go beyond the typical use for BUIS, which is short to moderate ranges.
As far as optics and mounts, unless you want quick disconnect capability (changing optics in the field often, night vision insertion, etc.) or just want to spend a lot of money on a mount, I reccomend an armalite one piece scope mount for optics. If you want lever action QD that is sturdy enough for the recoil of these rifles, the Larue Tactical one piece QD mount is top of the line.
AR10A4BF-2 That's the model. I know the 2 if for post ban. Here in CT they have some hang ups on a few things. Thanks for the info. I must admit my head spins a bit with it all but the advise of range time is well taken. Just need that 8th day in the week right now.
