A free float handguard or tube is a rifle feature that improves accuracy of AR style rifles by eliminating the contact between the handguard and the barrel. On older style AR rifles the handguard mounts to the gas block and to the delta ring. In a free floated rifled the handguard does not com into contact with the barrel except where it mounts to the barrel nut. The barrel then floats freely inside the handguard.
How does this improve accuracy? In two simple ways.
One, when you are shooting your rifle you have one hand on the pistol grip and one hand on the handguard. Depending on your shooting position you will exert a varying amount of force on the handguard. Also, if you are using the aid of a sling, like in highpower competition, you will be putting force on the end of the handguard. Even though a rifle barrel is stiff, that force is enough to flex the rifle and change your point of impact
