Due to case pressure and headspace concerns, I know that it's generally recommended to not use .308 Winchester ammo in older rifles chambered in 7.62 by 51. Is there any reason to think this is a concern with a Sig Sauer 716 Patrol chambered in 7.62? I note that Sig's marketing touts the gun as a "308" despite the official chambering. I have a lot of 308 match ammunition that I'm sure is loaded at SAAMI pressure levels. Should I be concerned running it through a new 716?
Has sig stated the chamber is 7.62 or .308? I ask because I don't know the brand outside of the pistols. The 7.62/.308 thing gets thrown around so interchangeably that I consider it a non issue. They know that folks are going to shoot both types of ammo so I suspect it is chambered accordingly.
IMHO the difference in pressure between commercial 308 and military 7.62 is not enough to worry about.
For instance, many lots of military 7.62 reach pressure levels common for 308. Much military surplus is surplus because it is out of spec... Even in the same lot much 7.62 will spike to 308 levels.
As far as I know (unlike .223/5.56 chambers) there are no critical chamber differences in 7.62/308.
If your weapon is in such condition that the (generally) higher pressure 308 is making you think twice, you should probably be using down-loaded handloads or not firing it at all.
I understand this can be a heatedly argued subject especially among owners of Indian Ishapore Enfield 7.62s. I have one, and after scouring the net for one confirmed to be damaged by 308 ammo and turning up empty handed I shoot 308 in mine with no reservations.
