I have an AR10T 24" and am having trouble with the bolt carrier coming all the way back and fails to reload. I think it might actually be catching on the bolt latch but need to get it back out with more time.
MY question is that someone told me that I probably need to shoot a heavier load. I was using American Eagle 150 grain FMJ Boat Tail
The condition you describe is called "short stroking." And it usually relates to the magazine or gas system, not the ammo. Does it short stroke with all your mags?
Starting from the muzzle:
- Check the gas block. Ensure that the screws are tight and that the gas block is centered on the barrel. If the screws are loose, it causes a gas leak. If the gas block is canted, the gas ports aren't lined up.
- Check the gas tube for cracks, dents, and dings.
- Check the bolt carrier. Ensure the carrier key is free of obstructions by running a pipe cleaner down it. Ensure the carrier key isn't loose.
If you suspect the bolt catch is slowing the rearward progress of the BCG, look for signs of unusual wear on the catch and the bottom of the bolt carrier.
Also, try using some extra lube on the BCG and upper receiver. Sometimes a lack of lube causes short stroking as well.
Thanks
I will start checking the gas system. I am just not sure it is not going all the way back or going all the way back and then catching. But will be tearing it down in the morning
Well it looks like the leak might be coming from the gas tube where it connects with the block. It has black streaks coming out
I will fix that and throw some rounds down range and let you know.
Thanks for the help
I bought an AR10T about three months ago, while waiting for it to arrive a local store ran a good special on ammo. Yep, American Eagle 150 gr fmgbt. I had the same problem that you're having. I went to the Arma Lite web site, to the library and read tech note 3. Arma Lite says that that ammo can cause these problems. That is the only ammo that I have had a problem with. Unfortunately I still have a lot of it left. Hope this helps.

Short stroking can be attributed to ammo most of the time if it's low grain and/or poor quality. We suggest 150-175 grain ammo with 168 grain being ideal. Since the ammo is American Eagle 150 then I'll bet it's the ammo.

Unfortunately the "black streaks" aren't unusual. This doesn't mean that you have a leak at the gas block.
