I know how the price of a gun can differ depending on where it is purchased and how good of a deal you may end up with, but I am trying to determine if the trade of my Springfield M1A (standard rack grade) for a AR10 is a comparable trade? Not only in dollars but rifle for rifle.
I'm a smaller guy who goes only 150 lb. max. I'm getting a little older, (53) and find the AR style rifles are easier for me to carry and handle. But I love the 7.62 mm round. Thats why I am leaning towards the AR10. Any comments!

I kind of agree with duck, but to answer the question, I think it's in the range of a fair trade, but it would depend a lot on the potential tradee

You could put it on gun broker or onr of the for sale sites and get $1400 for it. A DPMS SASS runs about $1200. C-products mags run $22 so you could get 8 mags. I used a bunch of these rifles for work and an M1A can be made to shoot very well. I just shot the National Guard inventation match with my 14 and was down only 8 points through the standing and rapids. A 489 in a 500 pt match aint bad. The rifle is beded and has a good barrel not much else. I've got one heavy Rock barrel left that needs to be finished chambered and crowned and the gas hole drilled to fit a M1A. I aint got any more 14s left to barrel. I turned one to an E2. The 14s are much more tougher than the 10s are. Which one do you like to shoot the best is the question.MSH

Yea, I know guys, It's a very hard decision to make. Was hopeful the wife would say,"just go buy the other one", but I haven't heard it yet.

Honey, Pumpkin, rifles are like shoes,...to women. You need more than just one pair in the same size. The M1A is a great get the work done, slog around in the mud, not the newest kid on the block pair of shoes. Don't get me wrong, it's old but still fully capable and competent, just starting to get a little worn out. (Ya, I know this is bull shit but so far you haven't actually lied.) I need a new pair of shoes,... er, I mean rifle. An AR10 is easy to work on and I can keep it good top running shape myself. It will last forever. They've come a long way since that old M14 was made.

(Are you with me here?)

Your wife will say some thing like, "Well sell the M14."

[I'll give you ten bucks for it!]

Tell her, "I tried to sell it but I could only get ten bucks for it."

You could also point out that, unlike a boat or car, a good rifle properly maintained isn't a depreciating asset, and can even go up in value :)

Problem solved! Keeping the M1A and buying a new AR10!!!
When she asked why I needed so many guns, all I had to do was say "Obama". Thanks to all, going shopping in a couple hours.
