My kid is about ready to hunt so a new rifle will be in the works over this next year.
I was pretty well set on a 6.5x55 swede until I got reading about hornady's 6.5 creedmoor.
Granted the pressure is a lot higher but the reviews seem to indicate the recoil is minor
and it out runs a 308 by quite a bit at long ranges. I know the swede in a modern rifle
can be loaded a lot hotter as well and will outrun it but at a cost to the mild manners
that the 6.5 swede is known for.
So to my question, has anyone looked at building an ar10 in the 6.5 creedmoor? They
are said to feed from a 308 mag.
For the availability of the brass and bullets I am looking to purchase an AR10 upper and getting it barreled and chambered to the .243 win.
I like the .243 for the speed and accuracy.Recoil is fairly mild too.
There is no shortage of brass or bullets for the creedmoor, hornady supplies them
as they developed the cartridge. Armalite has made 243 uppers for a long time. Just
make sure you get a barrel twist that will stabilize the 115 grain bullets if you want
to shoot 1000+ yards. Most 243 barrels were 1:10 which is good to 90 grains or so.
Not exactly a long range rig.
Is armalite still making .243 uppers? because i looked on their site and i couldn't find any. if i could get ahold of one of those it would be a perfect coyote gun.
Thanks,
1 ) how is the recoil with a 140 grain compared to a 150 grain 308 load?
2 ) What barrel length are you shooting and what speeds are you seeing with
140's?
All the data I see is with a 28 inch barrel. That's a bit long for a hunting gun.
I havn't received any 140's yet, only 120's so far.
It has a 24" Krieger BBL (.850 at muzzel) with a Badger FTE brake, IOR 4-14x50 scope and PRS stock. It weighs 13 lbs. w/o mag.
Recoil is very mild, at least half of a .308 with no brake. I have no chronograph but George a G.A. Precision said he has seen little or no loss of velocity as listed by Hornady.
Gas port sizing is criticle so this might not be a simple parts swap proposition.
Still breaking it in so I have no accuracy report yet.
jws...
I am planning on a light weight bolt gun for my kid. I think it is a caliber that will
allow the same gun to be used through to adult hood and beyond. A 243 is just a bit
light for elk and large muley's. I wish some of the manufacturers would get on this
cartridge, it looks ideal on paper.
