As for the rifle, what features are "must have?" At a minimum figure out what you want the gun to do, what barrel length best supports that task and what type of you prefer. Another key consideration is barrel material. If long barrel life is a priority or the gun is going to be driven hard, then I would recommend a barrel with a chrome lining. If this is going to be a bench/competition gun with a low round count, then I would go with a SS bull barrel.
LebbenB nails it... determine purpose (hunting? aereating paper?), operating environment (in the hills? long range zombie patrol?) and does one vendor's packaging of barrel/trigger quality and butt stock, grip, etc sway you/seem to be the best value (value not being what's cheapest).
This is my first rifle of significant caliber so I studied everything in the price range and settled for the intangibles that Armalite offers as mentioned in earlier posts. The AR10T CBNF has a NM trigger, SS triple lapped 16" barrel and its LIGHT!
What I did not accurately plan for were optics: EOTech holo (the Infidel model), a Burris tripler (definition of value), the bag (Galoti, unfolds into a mat but very little storage, not happy, I did not research bags as I should have), then its on to sling, swivels, rails, a tri-pod, of course I need a LaRue fold away mount for the Burris. And a flash device is not enough, I need a compensator JUST LIKE I SAW ON THE MILITARY CHANNEL... well, you get my drift.
But I LOVE the way this thing shoots!!! Yesterday was first trip to the range (had to wait for all that mandatory crap to show up, didn't I?) and you can watch how the holes walk across the target as I am adjusting the holo. I have groupings that made me giggle.
Which of course scared away all the manly men at the range.
or maybe it was the helmet...

If your budget for the rifle alone is $2k, then I'd still look HARD at the Armalite NM or their SuperSASS. But for a little more than 2K, I'd also look at the LMT MWS and the LaRue PredatAR, which is based on their highly successful OBR. Shooting both the LMT and the LaRue was what pushed me to buying a 7.62 AR.JohnnyDawg1 wrote: I may have made a typo. I meet that I am planning on spending 2k on the ar10NM and around 1k on the scope and scope mount. Has anyone shot or own the ar10NM from armalite? It has many features which appeal to me for the price. But I dont want to pull the trigger until I hear good things about armalite and the rifle. I have never shoot an armalite so and just want to make sure the quality is great.
An HWS w/a 3x magnifier on an FTS mount is a good set up for a 5.56 carbine. IMO, you'd be better served with a low to mid power variable, say 1-4x or the traditional 3-9x. Food for thought when you get tired of your current set-up. Comps are effective, but they tend to make you an unpopular person on the firing line of your range. Just sayin'...What I did not accurately plan for were optics: EOTech holo (the Infidel model), a Burris tripler (definition of value), the bag (Galoti, unfolds into a mat but very little storage, not happy, I did not research bags as I should have), then its on to sling, swivels, rails, a tri-pod, of course I need a LaRue fold away mount for the Burris. What sort of scope are you running? Most scopes, regardless of price point, come with a focus adjustment ring on the eyepiece. Without knowing the particulars of the scope, that's the first thing I'd check....objects in it are blurry on high magnification at 600+ yards.

JohnnyDawg1 wrote: Hey, I am new to this forum and am thinking of getting a ar10 very soon. I plan on not wanting to buy cheap and want great quality and craftsmanship. I own many other guns and know from experience that cheap is only good for your bank account. I was hoping someone could sell me on a great rifle manufacturer and model that would serve many year of use. Would like to not spend more than $2000 on basic rifle plus optics and accessories. I have been looking at the armalite ar10 national match but have not heard anything about it. Advise please, and remember I am really wanting quality.
