Well the bug finally bit me. This is going to be a year long project (Due to funds). Have been shooting AR's since 1967 so not a stranger and just finished a 15 carbine build. So here goes. I would like to start with a reasonalbly priced lower for 308 not pricy but also reliable. All suggestions are welcome.
In a nutshell, you have two options: Armalite pattern or KAC/DPMS pattern. Of the two, DPMS lowers are less expensive. Complete lowers run $300-$400, stripped lowers go ~$250 or so. Armalite lowers are about $400-450 complete, ~$230 stripped. The big difference in patterns is in the magazine well - Armalite lowers accept modified M14 mags; DPMS/KAC take modified FAL mags. This also drives the shape of the bolt carrier; the two are slightly different. There are some differences in the geometry of the upper to lower fit as well. Suffice it to say, the two patterns are not compatible.
