You replied:

Nope and nope. AR10A4 carbines, regardless of variant, have a mid-length gas system and mid-length handguards/railed forends.

You are correct that indeed is a "mid length" *AR15* handguard. Technically I am correct, that is a "[Armalite AR10] carbine" length gas system.

I remember now why I was confused, from AR10.com FAQ:

"Barrels are interchangeable, but cause problems due to a 3/16" length difference in gas tubes. Armalite uses the longer gas tubes to use standard AR15 handguards. the 3/16" makes up for the wider barrel nut/bigger receiver

Armalite "carbines" use a mid-length gas system while DPMS "carbines" use a carbine gas system."

-As I stated earlier in this thread, I wish manufacturers would be more informative in their item descriptions and more techincally specific. For instance, the word "carbine" should only be used to describe a =/<16" barrel rifle. Since multiple manufacturers make different specs for "carbine" rifles, like the DPMS/Armalite discussed above, there is really no such thing as a standard "carbine length" gas system for 308/7.62 direct gas impingement autoloaders. Even among the AR10 family there are differences, at least among handguards that are "standard", even when the gas system is the same length. My Noveske N6 uses the Armalite "carbine" length gas system, which is really "mid length", but uses a low profile gas block (not intended to have anything mounted on it) and has the handguard, longer than Armalite's "standard AR15 midlength handguard", free floated past the gas block. So you would properly describe the Noveske handguard as 10 inch, cause that's how long it is, but it's their "standard carbine" length. I looked on Armalite's rifle descriptions and remembered how I had to long ago go to a FAQ like on AR10.com to sort all this out, gotta admit, it's mighty confusing.

Thanks for the correction. I have a hard time memorizing things that are convaluted and inherently confusing...

It's odd that he said that is "not a standard build for us" when in fact they have the exact build and item code online, though "out of stock". It must be that it is rare one is ordered and he doesn't realize it's offered on the website, specific to the NM trigger. Oh well, I figured that was a custom order with those mags... your lucky the gun dealer was either wanting to dump it at a loss, or just didn't realize those extra mags were included with the order as well. Nice rifle, good deal, happy for you.

I agree.

I think AR models on the ArmaLite website that are "out-of-stock" would need to be ordered by your AFF before they would be manufactured.

Also, as you point out, in my situation the 2 extra 20-round magazines inside the factory sealed box proves it was a special order

FYI, I just picked my AR-10 a couple of weeks ago and it is identical. I ordered it from Palmetto State Armory and got a heck of a deal-new rifle. $1308 delivered to my local FFL. It came equipped with the quad rail fore grip, 2-20, 1-10 round mags, sling and a Plano rifle case.

I have not had a chance to fire it as I am still researching the type of scope and bipod to install. Learning alot from the forum.

Thanks, Pumpsmd
