Long Action Modern Sporting Rifle. Why not?

I can only think of three long action (30-06, or 7.62×63) American semis ever fielded, the M1 Garand, the 1918 BAR (selectable), and the M1941 Johnson (which barely got out the gate). There was no follow-on because in the '50s Project SALVO (or something) that said aimed fire was ineffective. But individually, there are certain advantages to the 30-06 round: It has a huge variety of factory ammo, it kicks tail on medium game, and it is right at the 20 ft/lb recoil tolerable threshold (somebody else's designation, not mine).

If had my choice of rounds in a modern sporting rifle it would be 30-06. I suppose nobody makes one because it's a startup/development/inertia/money thing, and some consider the 30-06 cartridge to be obsolete, but I sure wish they did. An AR-10 06_BNMF would be my dream come true.

I looked at the Philly Ord 80% BAR receiver thinking I might make a semi out of it, but it's an antique, difficult to adapt to a hand grip, and the Picatinny rail is completely out of the picture.

I forgot about the Fabrique Nationale Model 1949 (FN-49, SAFN, FN AL). That's weird, because I actually owned one! My FN-49 (Columbian 30-06 version) was about wore out, and had a tendency to break firing pins (I have no clue why). That was back before Al Gore invented the internet, and FN-49 parts were pretty scarce.

The best one, IMHO, was the Argentine .308 re-work with the 20 rd detachable box mag. But still no joy: The FN-49 is an antique too.

I do love a Garand I got my frist one when I was 14, and I paid $40. It was my deer, ground hog, wild dog, anything thing else I could shoot rifle. I carry that thing every where and shot it untill the head space was gone. As far as I know it still hanging in the gun room at the brothers house. Maybe you could work something out with an M1 charlie

I want to say I remember seeing an '06 AR pattern rifle at one time. Can't recall who made it, and it's bugging the hell out of me.

It's a "Cobb Mfgr" MCR. Cobb was acquired by Bushmaster in 2007. From their website;

August 20, 2007 - Windham, Maine: Bushmaster Firearms International, LLC announced today that it has completed a transaction to acquire the assets of Cobb Manufacturing, Inc., a Georgia-based developer and producer of Tactical Rifles currently available in .308, 30-06, .338 Lapua Magnum and .50 BMG calibers. In addition, Cobb’s founder and President, Skip Patel, has been named Executive Vice President of Research & Development for BFI.

Cobb, a Dallas, Georgia-based company, has been recognized for it’s innovative, out of the box approach to tactical platforms. Cobb’s innovations include its acclaimed patent pending Multi-Caliber Rifle semi-auto system (MCR) and expertise in large bore bolt action rifles. Cobb’s products are currently fielded with a number of Law enforcement agencies and militaries worldwide.

According to Chad Brooks, CEO of Bushmaster, "Adding .308, .338 Lapua Magnum, 30-06 and .50 BMG rifles to Bushmaster’s product offerings further establishes our foothold in the tactical rifle market, and provides platforms for future growth both in the U.S. and Global Law Enforcement and Military markets." Added Brooks, "Additionally, the opportunity to add Skip Patel to our management team and lead us in our R&D efforts, was critical as we begin to aggressively expand our products to further meet the demands of today’s various global customers ."

The current Cobb rifle lineup will be refined and re-branded with the Bushmaster snake, and will be produced out of Bushmaster’s Windham, Maine Facility. As part of the transaction, Bushmaster has also established a rapid prototype and R&D manufacturing facility in Georgia, where next generation products will be developed. The facility will maintain emphasis on Bushmasters new product pipeline for Commercial, Law Enforcement and Military tailored products.

Added Skip Patel, "The chance to join the Bushmaster family and see the Cobb products gain access to Bushmaster’s renowned attention to quality and volume production, gives me great confidence in our future. My new position will allow me to focus on outside of the box ideas and address the needs of today’s shooters across all market segments. Our rapid prototype facility in conjunction with the Bushmaster Custom Shop is a very exciting proposition".

No word about where the project went from there. Didn't Bushmaster get bought out too?

That's the one. Thank you for finding it, I was going nuts trying to remember.

yeah, cerberus bought out bushmaster, dpms, remington, aac, and many others. It coincides with bushmasters sharp drop in qc, although I still got the hots for an ACR.

Here's the really weird bit; it uses a modular mag-well!

It's an interesting idea. I suppose it allows you to have a mag-well and upper for each caliber you want to shoot, while not messing with the butt stock group. In practice I suspect one has to change the buffer group too when using much different cartridges, which sort'a defeats the concept.

Direct descendant of the 1918 BAR. Wiki-thing says it was marketed as a weapon for prison guards. It probably was

I completely forgot about that one....and people talk about an AR10 being "heavy".

I'd love to be able to sit atop a mountain of ammo and chug away with a BAR all day. an open field of cars and tannerite.
