Want to build a range.

I've been toying with the notion of building myself a range. I'm not talking about a 100 yard range, I am thinking the 1,000 meter type gig. I live in Texas, and the land out west in the El Paso area is pretty much scrub desert-relatively flat, abundant, remote, and cheap, due to the fact that it is scrub desert and nobody really wants it. As an added bonus, it is pretty good whitetail and/or mule deer habitat.
The thing is, I have no idea how much I need. I mean, obviously I am going to need a clear line of sight for 1,000 meters, but I am not so sure how much area I need beyond the target line to facilitate safety. I don't shoot big .50s or .408s, but I'd like to be able to do so someday if I choose. What do you guys think?

I answered this before , but I think it got lost in the recent upgrade. For a 1000 yd range, you would need about 120 acres. that is assuming it is narrow and long. 40 acres square is 1,320 feet each side, so three 40 acre blocks of land lined up would give you 1,320 ft wide and 3,960 ft(1,320 yds) in length.
More is better and if your land is a perfect square you will need half a section(320 acres)

You need a burm behind your 1000 target, so your misses can be spotted. If you don't you will struggle. I live in Utah, we just set one up on the western shores of the great salt lake. My new AR10T .260 remington shooting 130 gr bergers, were on target at 1000 with about six shots, from a 200 yd zero with a burm behind our target. Have fun

A range a with 3 40's lined up would be good, one range i saw they dug a pond past the intended distance and pushed all the dirt into one big bank like a levee which gave them a good backstop , also they had a game pond for some unaware whitetails and varmints(targets of oppertunity) kw
