i have a question for anyone who knows something about barrels. besides looks what is the difference between the recessed crown, and the 11 degree crown. i guess what i am asking is which one is better to have on a ar10t? also i am looking into getting a custom barrel for my ar10t anyone no of any good manufactures for a reasonable:unsure: price?
Recessed crowns are what you generally see on tactical rifles. Recessing the barrel allows extra protection for the barrel's crown.
The 11 degree crown means that the rifling is "broken" at an 11 degree angle to provide uniformity as the bullet exits the bore.
All barrels are crowned, but the angles vary. It's generally thought that the 11 degree crown is best. The real issue is whatever angle the barrel is crowned it must be uniform. Ususally, after crowning, the crown is lapped, as well.
On the AR's using flash hiders there's no need to recess the crown as the flash hider provides protection for the barrel's crown.
For use on an AR the barrel crown does not neccessarily need to be recessed...as long as there is a flash hider protecting the muzzle end of the barrel.
For the AR's with exposed muzzles I would definitely recess the crown.
that is some good to know info.I guess I really did`nt understand why a barrel needed a crown until now.
I wondered why My AR10 had the rifling recessed in so far.
