Stranger handloads

Recently, while shooting at a local range with my AR10 and M1A, another shooter strolled over to discuss loads. He swore that his Varget loads were unbeatable; I told him I knew it was a good powder, but I've got bunches of other powders, and don't feel a need to buy another (I'm using AA2520, WW748, AA2230, Benchmark and IMR4064). After awhile, he handed me a few of his and insisted I shoot them. I politely declined, saying that my loads are tailored for my rifles, and I don't shoot others handloads.

Why? 1) I had no way to verify his charge weight for safety; 2) I don't know how he sizes or if he trims cases; 3) I don't know if his neck tension and/or crimp is suitable for autoloading rifles, and 4) I don't know how many times his cases have already been fired. There might be other reasons I didn't think of at the moment. Besides, his loads were for a bolt action rifle, and I tend to load conservatively for my semiautos.

I'm wondering if other AR10 shooters feel as I do about this, or if I'm just too conservative?

I have been reloading for over 40 years now and the only person I trust to reload ammunition for one of my guns is me period. I have seen the damage and the injury's done by not following all the rules and failure to pay attention to detail.

I completely agree. I will not shoot any other handloads other than mine simply because I don't know whats in it ir if they used proper loading procedures. Do you know if he reduced the loads then worked up to a sutible charge for his components?
I reload For my ar 15 in 223, ar 10 in 308, 7mm-08, 9mm pistol, and coming soon the 338 federal for the ar 10.
One question I like to ask other hanloaders is what there estimated pressures are for there loads. Maybe thats a bit overkill but Im extremly meticulous in my loading so I like to know.

No matter what ask yourself this, do you want to handle an explosive projectile that you are unfamiliar with.

I do use varget and have found it to be a very capable powder. I say use what you know.

To conservative, NOT. When dealing with weapons like ours you have to be....it is not like you can walk into walmart and buy a new one of a couple c notes. I had a similar situation with a friend years ago, with a B 92FS, I had given him some brass to load for me, well after a month I got on him about it, the next day he gave me about 100 rounds of reloads.....I went out shooting the next day,,,,dam, there where flames coming out of the ejection port and the kick about took it out of my hand. I examined on of the spent cases and it was burnt and split...so much for shooting that day. I went to him and asked what the _____ he gave me...and told him what they were doing...Oh I gave you the wrong ones, those were HOT loads, I was ready to beat him. SO point being, don't take candy from strangers or ammo for that fact, now if Zfk55 or edge or MSH would hand me some shells, I would trust them to do the job and that they would not harm my weapon. That is my two cents worth...

I agree totally. I would not trust anyone I didn't know either. To take it one step further I don't like to shoot other peoples rifles with their handloads either, too much at stake.
