The wifeys Uncle Buck passed on last summer, He and I had become quite close over the years, always wandering offt into the wilds, shooting, targut practicing and just hanging out. A lot in the garuge, He`d usually stop by at least once a day and have a smoke or three and see whut I`z a working on or building.
After the funeral and cleaning out His house, His daughters{only 2 childrens} told Me that they wanted Me to have His rifle and shotgun and so i took them home.
Well, knowing the way things go and that it`s not over until it`s over, one of the daughters husbands comes over to collect up them firearms,He was acting ratherly sheepishly and so I thought somethingk wuz up. welp, OK, so I opened the vault, hauled them out and handed them tooh Him and the reloads I had worked up for the rifle tooh.
After He had left, I realized I had not sent the cases for the firearms along and so I called, told the daughter about the cases that I had forgot to return. heyheyhey, She got pizzled and must a raised a ruckus cause pretty quick the hubby calls and tells Me that He would givum back at the furst oppurtunity. they live 300 miles away to duh west.
Day after Christmas, wifey and I and the two kittnes makes a journey over to big Sky for a few days to be with Her fambly. On the way back home, We stops in Bozangelas and goes to the wifeys cousin fur a visit and to collect up the firearms.
The hubby asks if it`d be OK if He kept the remy shotgun as He would like to take up burd hunting, well, OK, I conceded to that.
He hauls out an old 30-30 winny and tries handing that offt to me, No, thas not the rifle, next is a composite stock savage .243 cal built fur a youth, no, thas not the one, so He is gone, crawlingk in His attic, the garge and crawl space and says He can not find it, well, His wifey, My wifeys cousin, climbs on Him loike S on S, and so, with a defeated look, He comes out with the Model 700 Remy and the boxes a amminition fuhr it too. heyheyhey. :rotfl:
Over all, the furniture is very nice. The bolt works very smooth and overall the rivle looks to be in excellent condition with very few mars or marks.
The sling is home made, by the wifeys uncle and the scope is a rather cheap lookingk affair but the optics is real clear and the variable works as it should.
In the muzzle end of the barrel is some greenish corrosion, like from a brass cleaning rod being run through the bore without a guide to protect the crown and riflings. I will scrub itout real gud before takingk it to duh range.
After I loaded the rounds for Uncle Buck, he and I took the rifle out so He could see how the reloads would work, at the fifty yard targut, He was an inch or so high and dead center so I think the crown and riflings~ll be real gud. I will give a range report, one a these days if it ever gets above zero degreez.
Remington Model 700 with date codes of L R and right up against the receiver, on the barrel is a sort of a turned on its side 9. 30-06 caliber.

That is a nice Remy 700. Don't change a thing. That's a classic with the old timey trigger. Many a buck musta hated its accuracy.

:I-agree:
My Dad had the same rifle. I still somewhat regret trading it in on an Colt AR15 HBAR. Should have kept it and used more cash.

I am thinking that this old rifle will probably become My "very long range" shooting rifle. I think that it will probably be a lot like that pre 64~30-06 winny I had, that My youngest son still has in Alaska.
I have sold fire arms, not a lot of them, and, that .308 winchester is one that I could kick My self for getting rid of. I was`nt needing the cash or even traded it for another fire arm, just sold it out right, made a few bucks on it and thought, I did good there, not realizing what a very nice rifle that one was.
I also have a U.S. Remington 1917 enfield in the vault. That one still has some cosmoline that needs to be cleaned out of, in the nooks and crinnies, After I get that one out and cleaned up, I am going to try and find an original mil.spec. scope mount for it. I am not sur how to tell, but I think that this 1917 could be something different than the run of the mill. It has a set trigger with a very light touch to the second stage. something that I did`nt see in the other two 1917 that I have converted to a different caliber. Both of those rifles are in Alaska too. My son seems to have put His claim on them and paid for the conversion to a 6mm-06 and the other to a 375 Ruger. This one has not been messed with and is original except for the top hand guard wood pieces are missing.
If anyone happens to come across a set of original wood top pieces for a 1917 then please let Me know for how much and I will get the cash to You.
