i.e. ArmaLite chambers theirs for NATO cartridges and would use NATO gauges. If you use SAMMI gauges in a NATO chamber, you could get a false reading and think parts are bad when they are not.

I worked in a major medical center for years, and I have three or four doctors for friends. MDs are interesting people, and a lot of them are major league OCD. Imagine trying to balance a life where you're on perpetual call and trying to raise a family. Some of 'em are major league you-know-whats too, particularly the ones that are too young to have gotten over their God complex, but the job shapes them, and they're a different type of folks.
My ex once worked for THE neurosurgeon in this area. His patients thought he was God. One day he called her into the office and said he had a problem: The application said "Hit any key to continue", and he couldn't find the "Any" key.
