The only thing I can add to the good advice you have been given is that if you take your cat to the vet to be put down, give your sons and yourself the option of going in to be in with him at the end. When I was a kid and that happened, my Dad would just drop the dog or cat off, and I would feel guilty, like we abandoned the pet. I found out closure is much better for all of us if you stay and comfort them to the end. It sounds dumb, but I don't even want to see a family pet die alone.

Thanks for the advice guys and I appreciate the time you all took for this.

Having grown up within a fire fighting family and having a Dad with a "history", they have heard more than their share about folks at accident scenes and draggin bodies out of rivers and the whole gambit so they DO understand and have heard a whole lot about death.

I personally have an "issue" with having anyone else do it for me. I've seen too many strangers AND jerks go that I either didn't know or didn't care about and have been granted virtually NO opportunities to be there when someone or something I care about goes. The list is pretty short anyway but you know what I mean.

Besides, the old boy deserves to be "respected" by someone that loves him enough to take care of things proper and my wife and I spoke several times now about it and she agrees although she does feel bad for me - thinking it's gonna add to my damaged soul or something I spose...lol

I actually just want to get it done now that the decision has been made and the worst part for me is waiting until I know they are all ready for it and then making the decision to get it done.

They'll all go for a little ride after saying goodbye and then I'll give the old boy a couple of happy pills in some soft food and once he's drifted off, I'll just handle it quick and wrap him up to go into the ground.

I think Cathy and the boys being out of school and off of work today was a good thing since they all got to talk and spend a lot of time with him so I think it will be soon but we'll see.

He's already started filling up with fluid again as I can see his girth has increased a little since I brought him home last night so waiting will just make him suffer.

Who knows. I think being torn between how I know how to handle things and my family's hearts is not always the easiest thing for me since, well, maybe you guys haven't noticed but, I'm not always the most sensitive fella...

We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for all your thoughts and time though guys.

Sincerely

Today's the day. I just got done making him a little cocktail and gonna go upstairs and take a few photos of the boys and Cathy with him one last time.

I'd be lying if I said it isn't hurting me watching my family in pain.

I'm not sure that I'm all that crazy about this conscience I've developed.

He was a good Cat. Lived a good life and will be missed.

This pic was taken just before my wife took the boys for a ride and they were all at peace with it which made my job easier knowing they would be coming home 1 cat short.

Thanks for everyone's help.
