I have been on the internet since '78, in those days it was a bunch of engineers hooked up with others and various research offices and universities across the US. In over 30 years being on a computer and the internet I have never had a virus or other malware issue. I wrote the draft for a Army policy on staying safe and I based the policy letter on a policy on Safe Sex. Practice safe sex, practice safe computing.

The internet is a world of data, data is electrons and guys and gals like me can make those electrons do their bidding. ANY action, ANY keyboard stroke generates data and that data does not go away unless its overwritten and that does not happen very often.

This is a good article and all should read and understand that when you send something across the internet its their for the WORLD to see and it does not go away ver easily. In fact I can pull up data going back years and years.

Wanna see: do a search on YOUR screen name see how many times you pop up. A good detective can start with your screen name and in less than 30 min send you and e mail with a pic of your house, street address, where you work, how much school taxes you paid last year, how many kids you have and where they go to school and the beat goes on and on.

Don't put anything out on the internet that 10 years from now may bite you in the azz...

Social engineering is THE number one way to hack an account. I have a friend that does security audits for banks. You would think they have some of the safest systems out there. Some do some....not so much. One of the things he does the first time he does an audit is drop a couple USB flash drives near the employee entrance. Not 10 but maybe 2 or 3 where employees will find them when they show up for work. They pick them up and automatically stick them in their computer to see what is on them. BANG it's all over. He knows who stuck them in and what computer.

I have a BS in computer security science. (Along with BS in computer engineering and...some other BS degrees). One of the things any company I work with do, is to check out your Facebook Profile. There is so much info you can get from FB that people try to hide in an interview. It's almost funny. It's like voluntarily allowing someone to track your every move. Especially if you allow your phone to upgrade your status automatically. Most people feel free to spout off about their party habits, drunken binges, love life, political views, the list goes on. THEY WOULD NEVER SAY ANY OF THIS IN AN INTERVIEW.

From the article; "Fixing this requires strong government will, but they're just as punch-drunk on data as the corporations. Slap-on-the-wrist fines notwithstanding, no one is agitating for better privacy laws."
There is nothing the present government can or will do to help this. They will demagogue the issue and use it to gain power.
In my not so humble opinion the answer is plain old common sense and the use of it.
The statist cheer every time they hear a call for government to do something
I find it strange everyone assumes they have this privacy right on the Internet, have they never read one user agreement?
My grandmother had this issue licked and she didn't have a clue what the Internet is. She would explain the difference between saying something and writing it down. "You need to choose your words very carefully when writing for posterity." I guess I've always treated the net like I was writing it down for all to see forever.
When you think about it we Liberty minded people can use this monitoring to our advantage. Big buisness cannot help itself, it must chase profits wherever it leads them. Politicians are empty vessels waiting to fill themselves with public approval. FEED THEM, it is up to us to supply the data that leads them. Don't be shy, join every like minded group you can, state your will no matter how "radical" it is perceived by the statists. :soapbox: stepping off now....... :usa:

Wonder if they can figure out how much of the data is BS? Back in the 90's when the internet started to really roll, I always used fake information. Not so much out of privacy but more for silly mischief. I knew it was worth it when I started getting those AOL floppies, magazine offers and other junk in the mail under the fake names I would use online.

I sometimes wonder if the people in that old house still get mail for Sally Mander, Snapon Renchard, Winn Chester, the list goes on.

I think anyone who DOESN'T already have this in their heads is living in la la land. The internet WAS a great idea and still is however, power struggles, paranoia, greed and an ever growing government desirous of control has distorted the dream and turned it into a tool that we all constantly volunteer to help them improve and hone.
