I was in Norfolk, VA this past week administering VA state bar exams. The exams are 3 hours each session with time added in for instructions etc. Roughly they are 4 hours each with an hour for lunch in between. The exams were held at the Waterside Marriott.
I was headed into the second session when I saw a Navy Seaman Recruit sitting on the couch in the lobby. I walked over introduced myself, shook his hand, had a quick conversation and thanked him for his service. During my brief conversation a couple other people walked over to him and thanked him for his service as well.
When I got out of the second session I noticed that he was still sitting there. I walked over to him again and asked why he was still there. He said that the PO2 that was supposed to come pick him up got busy so he had to wait for the duty driver. I asked him if he had eaten and he said no he lost his wallet the night before and didn't have his ID or any money. While I was talking to him one guy brought him a pack of smokes and another 4 or 5 came over to thank him and shake his hand.
There was a bar/resaurant just off the lobby so I dragged him in and bought him lunch/dinner. At least I tried. It seems while we were eating someone else told the waitress to put the bill on his room tab. He had left before we could thank him. While we were eating there must have been 10-15 people that stopped by to thank him for what he was doing.
Over dinner he told me that the PO2 that was supposed to pull his bag off the Ike before it sailed had forgotten to so he had nothing but what he was carrying. He also said he was going to have a pain getting back on base without an escort because he lost his ID. (lost mine once so I could sympathize.) Since I didn't have to pay for my own dinner I slipped $40.00 into his hand as I was saying goodbye. He wouldn't take it. I tried to talk him into it but he wasn't having any part of it. (He was in for a surprise when he checked his bag though.) We exchanged phone numbers and I wished him luck, went up to my room and started getting ready for bed. I got a text thanking me for the $$ and he said the duty driver finally got there and he was headed back.
The thing that surprised me during all this was how many people, of all ages, wanted to shake his hand, thank him, and wish him luck. I have been pretty down this past couple of weeks because of all the crap that is happening with the gun ban and media lately. I'll tell you this; I have changed my mind about the American public quite a bit after this.
