I used to work for a guy that had a HUGE piece of land. He had an old boat out back and he used to let me warm up my shotguns and semi's on it sometimes. Fiberglass boats make interesting targets if you are curious about penetration with buckshot and shotgun loads as well as pretty much any handgun loads.

When I was first getting my wife in to shooting, I used tennis and golf balls - I threw one on the ground in front of us, handed her the pistol and said "shoot it". Every time she hit it, it would jump and spin and do tricks for her but it would also move farther away - making her work a little harder with each hit. I think it inspired her to get better faster and also added her level of fun when learning since she needed to learn to stand, steady her hold, support her firing hand better and work on breathing so she could get those long shots. I have to say, she's a hell of a shot with a handgun now so watch out - she LOVES shooting balls...

What kinds of things do you guys shoot at when you get a chance that you find odd or interesting or just plain ol fun?

We have a dueling target that is a blast to shoot. It looks kinda like this:

You shoot at one side and someone shoots at the other and the first one to get the targets on the other side wins. My son and I can blow a LOT of ammo on this. It's a blast.

Miniature pumpkins are a blast to shoot. My brother had several hundred left from his truck garden a couple years ago. When you connected good with the AR-10 it just made a big orange colored mist. For a little extra challenge we floated them in the creek. Bugs got the pumpkins this year so we shot gourds but they just didn't vaporize as nicely as pumpkin.

Toilet paper and paper towel tubes filled with baby powder and sealed up with tape. When hit, they give a nice splash of powder. I didn't come up with this on my own, I saw something similar on Top Shot and thought, "Hey - I can make those."

Nothing beats a shootin' car. 23 more payments and its all mine.

Seriously though, anything reactive works for me. I did have plans to build the rifle equivalent of a whack-a-mole game. A metal box with Pdog silhouettes that pop up at random.

I've shot cars. In my current line of work though, that would be known as road rage so I'll resist the urge... :)

Any time I take someone new to shooting to the range I bring along 2 liters filled with water. Then let them plink away with a shotgun or pistol. If given enough ammo and 2 liters I think I could even convert Feinstein. Nothing beats the smile that comes over there face. Kids forget about recoil and adults go away just wondering , wondering why they didn't take up shooting before.
