IMOP he was one of our best modern era Generals....brilliant tactician and strategist, straight talker to the people of the USA. Huge asset to the Gulf War. You will be missed.

I had the honor of serving under and meeting the man at an exercise in camp Le June, spring 1984 and then later at Ft. Stewart. He chewed my Colonel's ass then turned around and told me what a great job I was doing, liked him ever since. He seemed to like to chew on his officers publicly. They would go in the command tent and you could hear him below at them. The Colonel would come out all red faced and we'd race off to fix a problem somewhere.
He obviously knew politics as well. He was knee deep in the Iran/Contra thing and didn't even get asked about it. I think he could have been president if he had chosen.

I recall reading there was pressure on him to run, but he declined due to moral conflict or something like that. He would have got my vote.
Wish I could have met him.
