Flexibility keeps you from getting hurt on a bad day as much as conditioning bud.

The brand name on mine just says "fitness gear". It's black with like 36 or so steel bars inside little pouches and is pretty rugged. It also has steel rings strongly attached to both the front and back - the ones I use to add weight sometimes.

Another reason I like adding weight is because my boys are young and many days I still needed to work out but had them with me so adding weight got me a decent workout while hill climbing or around the track but also made it so I tired faster, couldn't go as fast and let my boys stick with me at least a little better although they would usually just run back and forth inside the track to meet me at each side for a sec and "high five" or something..lol

If you have the money, buy a 20 AND a 40. You'll eventually not use the 20 at all but I can tell you jumping right to the 40 will be a lot less fun that it sounds... :)

Wow. I just realized you used the word "shortcuts" when asking about getting back into shape.. And I thought "I" was making jokes earlier...lol

Yea, I have no shortcuts buddy. The only REAL shortcut to getting into shape is truly, and I mean this, never letting yourself get out of shape.

I wish there WAS a shortcut though cuz lemme tell ya, I'd be taking it myself right now. They just really don't exist and anyone that tells you otherwise is either lying or going to lead you down a road that will NOT be good for you.

So called "shortcuts" are usually very unhealthy ways of cutting weight OR, medicinal things like steroids that, as far as I know, have never really been proven to be without SOME kind of side effect whether it be immediate or delayed. Either way, it's just not good to rush if you want to find a routine that you can live with long term.

Whatever you do find something you enjoy doing. It makes it easier. I took up Karate at age 53, and it was great. Kept me motivated to mix it up with the young guys. They didn't like it so much. No prestige if you beat an old guy, but you lose a lot of it when he beats you.

Yeah, I said short cuts. Mostly just for humor, I do know better, but also so much has changed. I started with the 4 food groups, and now there is a pyramid?

Apparently if you can afford the doctor and what not, like hollywood types, custom tailored growth hormones will keep you fit and energized.
I had always heard there was no way to short cut it and steroids would leave you with all sorts of issues if it didn't kill you. It's a different story these days, but even if I could afford it, I'd still not do it.

martial arts aint for me. I've tried a few different things over the years and never found a good fit. Might try boxing, because I haven't yet.

There ARE MMA gyms springing up all over the place. If you have any wrestling, judo or non "striking" type skills bud, they are always looking for new members and it is a lot less intensive when it comes to learning katas and all of the artsie stuff. Even if you just get to go in and roll around and get your ass kicked every night for a while, it's all great stuff for getting in shape AND learning a bit of extra stuff that will never hurt a man to know.

Once you get into shape a bit better, doing some boxing and learning some strikes and kicks is a lot more fun in an MMA style environment than with a sensei in a class because you are learning it all hands on with no belts or demonstrations to put on and you are pretty much just pitting yourself against whoever you get to spar with that day within your realm of skill - or above it ;) .

It's a lot more fun getting into shape when you've got guys willing to kick your ass and teach you at the same time as well as having weights and training aids all over the place. I've been in and out of all kinds of stuff over the years and standing in a class, all lined up with a bunch of people going "hiyaa, hiyaa" has never appealed to me either and I always just needed someone in front of me to be able to enjoy either learning the hard way or sharing a few little things of my own.

If you walk in, just act like the good guy I know you are, tell them you want to get in shape AND willing to spar and spend some time getting your butt kicked to do it, I'm sure you'll fit right in well and become a scary, 1000 yard shootin, ass kicker in no time... :)

My arms are good and sore today, and surprisingly that feels good. not the same good that it was a few years ago, but not bad either. Tomorrow I warm up the legs and hike. Not taking much just camelbak, pistol, gps, and essentials. probably 15 pounds. The hard part will be finding a hill to climb in FL. Everything around me is as challenging as a speed bump and about as high. I'm going at least 20k round trip, that should be cardio enough and give me a good idea on how much more weight I can pack on.

I'm looking around for a place that has a good attitude about it.
So far may favorite fighting class was about fighting dirty. The guy didn't stay in business for long because everyone was into the ju's and do's at the time. I knew it was going to be good when he started with "lesson one, the world is covered in weapons. learning to recognize these things in your environment and how to exploit them is what we will start with". He would build various settings, like sitting in a restaurant and cover everything within arms reach and how it could be used to gain an edge, or buy time to draw a pistol. I still don't look at a butter knife the same way. About a 3rd of the group I started with didn't come back, cuz weapons are for cowards or they want to be a douchefu master. This was before AR had ccw and he would say every day he is not telling anyone to break any laws, but explaining to a jury how you and others are alive is a better problem than your family standing around your grave.
Also covered tons of disarm, holds, and hold breaks. That part of it was a workout and then some but I've yet to find a class like that again.

Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

When someone hopes to do you bodily harm, there IS no fair, no unfair, only protecting yourself and stopping the assailant with whatever means at your disposal.

words to live by.

You said you dont mind rucking,, well then partner, Ruck, Ruck, and Ruck some more. When we get guys training for SFAS, especially our rather big guys, and not just fat but muscular guys, they ruck ruck and ruck,, four days a week at least. The pounds fall off them. Drink more water than sports drinks, and keep eating up protien. Obviously I dont know your past training, but We always start guys off with 40lb rucks to begin with, and then after 6 to eight weeks you should be ruckin a 60-80, for 6-12 miles. good steady pace is 4 miles per hour. Plus you wont have to worry about impact injuries that usually come with running for us older guys. I'm alittle bias though I love rucking, it's how I kill off stress. Good luck to you..

I will be moving to a 40lb ruck and keeping the distance the same. The small pack I took last time didn't make it worthwhile as far as workout is concerned. I had nearly all my water left and was not feeling it like I think I should.
I did have a great time harassing a corn snake. I really need to catch one and bring it home.

I don't consider myself an expert, but I've been working out for 50 years and my weight has only fluctuated 10 pounds since I was a teenager. I suddenly began gaining weight in my 40s while I was still working out 6 days a week of running and weight lifting. I discussed this weird weight gain with both my daughters who have a PhD and Masters degree in nutrition. They both said if I want to lose weight there is only one way -- reduce calorie intake. So I started looking at what had changed in my diet and started eating more healthy again, reducing my intake of sugars/starches like bread, pasta, candy, potatoes, beer, etc. Alcohol is a horrible calorie maker. I rarely drink any alcohol or soft drinks and drink a lot of water. Well my weight went right back down.
The key to toning your muscles as everyone above has said is find something you enjoy as an exercise. You don't have to exercise in a gym although I prefer a gym because having other people around motivates me to have a harder workout. Go canoeing, rucking, dirt biking, yard work like splitting wood, etc., etc. It also really helps to find a friend to do physical things with as you end up motivating each other. Guaranteed there will be days when you don't feel like working out, but your buddy (male or female) still feels like working out. So, you end up motivating each other in each other's down days.
