I was in the 8th ID LRS company during my second tour of Germany. Our German partnership unit took us out to one of their ranges and let us participate in their weapons familiarization course. The usual array of NATO/US and Soviet/WP small arms were there, but they also had PPsH 41 SMGs, MP40 SMGs and StG 44s. When I asked why they were included, the instructor's comment was that the Russians never throw anything away and that both the East Germans and the Czechs continued to build and use the StG44 into the 60's. The MP40 was included as a comparator/ancestor to the Swedish K gun.
