Latigo is cattle hide leather tanned with a combination of alum and gambier used for western saddle cinches and other saddlery. It has numerous outdoor uses wherever a supple, durable leather is needed. I've got about 1/2 a hide left over from a project and I'm thinking about making a latigo scabbard holster for my folding M1 carbine.
Is there any good reason not to use latigo where it will be in contact with metal finishes?
Latigo is much happier in contact with female surfaces.
No, it's not going to be a problem, but rifle scabbards are typically made with stiffer leather than latigo leather.

True. I hadn't considered that factor. What I'm mainly interested in is a tight fit and protection from dings, and latigo is what I've got, so I think I'll give it a try. If it turns out I might make one for my 18" 870 folder too. I think I've got enough for two scabbards without piecing anything together.
Charlie (is happy in contact with female surfaces too )
