Crazy range day- need a suppresor!

I just experienced something that makes me even more sure that I need a suppresor. I had my grandkids and nephew out for some range time. We don't have an official range just 280 acres of hill country and timber. I did my normal trip around the section looking for anyone in the fields or maybe mushroom hunting and with no signs of people we set up and started throwing lead. We were shooting off a lane and down into a ditch about 150 yds, not a hill ahead or beside us that isn't at least 300 foot higher than the targets, that with the downward angle and hay bales for a backer and I feel pretty safe about it for a range. The kids shot the .22's for an hour then I got the AR-10 out. I slowly emptied a 25 round clip into the target at 150 yards and was reloading so the kids could take a few shots when a farmer came flying up. The farmer started screaming that he was working over the hill and could hear bullets flying over his head. My heart dropped, here I was instructing the kids on saftey and this happens. He wasn't sure what kind of cannon I was shooting but the deputy better take it away, thats when I notice the deputy coming down the lane. Doing his job, the deputy started getting all the details. Turns out the tree's he was working behind were at a 90 degree angle from where we were shooting from and about 3/4 of a mile away. Physics tell me that the odds of my bullets flying over his head were slim to none at best. He kept screaming so I never got to say a word to him but when he tore off the deputy told us there wasn't a problem with our location and left. If I would have had a supressor I don't think the guy would have even known we were there. We called it a day not wanting any more confrontation with the hot head but it sure pissed me off because the 25 round group (FN surplus ammo) could be covered by a silver dollar, damn that rifle can shoot! :) I guess the costs of a suppressor might be worth not dealing with idiots like that! Who in their right mind screams at a group of people all holding guns anyway!

These types are everywhere. It gets worse when there is full auto.
I guess the sound of freedom will always flush out the commies.

In any case, suppressors are always a good idea. Once you get one, they do tend to multiply and become an addiction unto themselves.

Suppressor? If I were you I'd invest in some "No Trespassing" signs.

The signs are there, I just have to decide on an enforcement policy that works!

The enforcement policy that works for me is _*NO*_*TRESPASSING*_.

I like the implied enforcement policy in Niven and Pournelle's "Lucifer's Hammer":

"DANGER! YOU ARE ENTERING GUARDED LAND. GO NO FURTHER. IF YOU HAVE BUSINESS HERE, WALK SLOWLY TO THE BARRICADE AND STAND STILL. THERE WILL BE NO WARNING SHOTS FIRED. KEEP YOUR HANDS IN PLAIN SIGHT AT ALL TIMES."

The one in Heinlein's "Farnam's Freehold" might do just as well:

"Farnham's Freehold. Trading Post & Restaurant Bar

WARNING!!!

Ring Bell. Wait. Advance with your Hands Up. Stay on path, avoid mines. We lost three customers last week. We can't afford to lose YOU. No sales tax."

If you haven't read "Lucifer's Hammer" please do. It is the most likely "post-apocalyptic" scenario of any that I know. It goes into details about the probable players, and how the best laid plans can go completely awry.

I might have found out what his chip was. He was charged and convicted with illeagle discharge of a firearm and trespassing a couple years back. He was hunting without permission on a neighbors place and ended up putting some holes in his machine shed. Sounds like he complains about others shooting every time he gets a chance now.
Armalite may end up with a sale out of the deal, I was showing another law enforcement officer the target and he was impressed. He wants to come out and shoot it some tommorrow. I wonder if my farmer friend will show up again
