Well I did it, traded off the 45 full size 1911 for a compact model or I should the last of my full sizes for another compact model. Since the wife got CCP she has taken my kimber away from me which left me with nothing to carry. So not having much money I went out the gun show Sat to see if I could trade into a nice little compact for the wife (which will no dout be my carry) and found a Rock Island compact for 380.00 the traded me gave me a shoulder rig, a total of 3 mags and 100 rounds. Not bad deal for me the 45 I had was build in 1985 my Safari Arm in Lacey WA for me and I paid 450. then and shot that gun in over 100 matches not counting hours on the range. So we will see how this one works anybody here have one?
I do not own a Rock Island, but I have shot them and they are good pistols. I've owned Kimbers, Wilsons and STI guns as well. The Rock Island isn't as nice as the higher end guns, but they will reliably get the job done, and I think that's the most important factor for a carry gun. Besides, carrying a gun everyday wears on the finish eventually no matter how careful you are, and who wants to wear out a 2,000 dollar gun?
I own a Dan Wesson Valor bobtail model 1911, and it is my favorite I've ever owned, beating out Kimbers, Wilson Combats, STIs, and Night Hawks. The next time you are at a gun show and see one, do yourself a favor and get your hands on it...you'll see what I mean right away...a great feeling gun, and it shoots like a dream. That said, it cost me 1600 bucks, so I carry a Springfield XDM in .45 as my everyday carry gun...I don't mind beating it up nearly as much as I'd mind beating up my Dan Wesson.
Well my kimber is a very well made gun and I love it to death, but your right carring every day took it toll on her. She looks longer in the tooth than she is but still funtions like a top.
The Rock Islnad remines me of that old 45 your dad carried round in the glove box of the pick-up, but the little thing shoots very well, I have about 500 rounds down range with it it's still nice and tight no rattel. When I got the gun there was a guy there buying his second one and his story he love it, but his hammer was off to one side and had a funny wear which cause him to have to pull the hammer have have a new one put on. I have had no such wear.
I will this guns break if you use them they all do, I have replace 2 springs in the kimber, and change sites. So they all need a little TLC.
If you are looking for an affordable price carry in 45 give the Rock a try.
I have a Kimber TLE/ RL II and love it but I've been thinking of getting a Springfield XDM .45 though I have heard from my brother and a friend that it takes some getting used to because of where the center of gravity is.
I have a Sprinfield loaded model with night sights, feels just like the 1911 I was trained on in the Army. For me it is perfect! I heard rumors that Armalite may be adding a .45 to their pistol line, hope it is true!
