Since my Benelli is a smooth bore, AND since the range I use doesn't allow buckshot or anything unless we are blasting skeet with game loads, I prefer the Federal Tru-ball Slugs at 1600fps for the range. At 100 yards, I can hit a 4 or 5 inch 5x on a human silhouette 5 out of 9 shots and have the other 4 within an inch or so so they definitely do it for me. They are a bit dirty but with an 18.5 barrel on my semi auto, I've seen those expensive sabots pass thru targets sideways and the Tru-balls nail it solid every time thru hundreds of rounds and normally at a fairly high rate of fire.
At home I keep it loaded with #1 buck with a full bandolier of slugs and #1 mixed for whatever.
I always have buck around too but I prefer the Remington #1 for my defense loads cuz even though my wife is just little, she can still blast that stuff all day and the reports I have read on "lethality" rate #1 buck VERY high for damage with less "travel thru" so it's safer within the house.
Have you ever even SEEN a shotgun there rifle man?? They are big and make a big boom and when the crack heads start gettin pesky, it's about the ONLY thing they'll listen to without question...
Pretty lucky on the range down here as long as you pay your money and clean up your mess you can shoot anything so I run number 6 for range play and just slugs and 00 for by the bed. cause it cheaper
OO for the pesky one's ;)or maybe some rock salt if I'm feeling nice  4 for pheasants although I load 6 or 8 for the first 2 rounds , 4 for ducks, now that has to be steel shot :S , don't want the geese or ducks dying from lead poisoning. :naughty:
Sharky I purchased 3 boxes (five each box) for about $18 if I remember right.
I've got five in the Remington 870 next to the bed.
I pretty much feel it's a non survivable round.
7 wound channels and it's game over. Of course double 00 gives ya 9 if the spread gets a chance to take effect.
For home defense their fairly reasonable. I've a bandalier with ten more of the Hexolite 32's, five slugs and 10 double 00. I sure as hell better never need that much.

From 10-15 yds they're going to sit up and take notice, even if your shooting bird shot.
If you read up on it, bird and game loads for home defense, (even though you and I both know they will damn well do some damage,) are not even recommended for home defense by the FBI. Apparently too many people get back up and keep coming with those loads. Got no idea why they would WANT to but if they are ALSO armed, then I can see the issue cuz when dropping an "armed" assailant, even though "killing" is not the goal, you don't want something that will leave them able to pull the trigger or continue pulling the trigger of their own weapon.
Like I've said, I have ALWAYS been a double OO man but with my wife being only 5 feet tall, I try and use the biggest load she can handle WELL and yet not so small that she has to "tend to the assailant" with more than one or two blasts.
When the smoke is clearing, if I don't happen to be at home at the time, I want her to be fairly confident that the excitement is over and she and the boys can just clear out till the good guys arrive without having to worry about anyone suddenly getting back up...
Just my take though. We've all got our favorites...
