Anyone reload or ever tried .30 caliber sabots that use the .224 bullet?
I'm sure they probably don't work to well in semi-auto's. :S
They sound interesting running in the 3400-3800 fps range. Now I'm thinking that they could do some real damage on prairie dogs and coyotes.
Brother if you can master the sabot, a lot of people will come knocking. The concept has always intrigued me, but I don't think anyone has a real good grip on the science.
Wish my Dad was alive, he did a lot of work with Sabots in his career, everything from 105mm down to the SPIW, but as much of the work was classified, he didn't talk much about it.
Some good stuff in there Sisco.
Years back, I had several boxes of 30-06 Sabots, I never tried tham at the range, but, every once in a while I would break out a couple or three rounds and plug p-Dogs with them.
Very fast and the accuracy was quite good too. Just shoot low.
These Sabots used a .22 booolit.
Yep, I've got one box of the Remington Accelerators in 30-06 left in my stash. I shot a few boxes as a kid, they had them for several calibers. I had read somewhere they were new laws against them because the bullet would not be traceable to the gun due to lack of rifling, never found any solid info on that though???????
A 55gn bullet from a 308 could do about 3800fps and up.
I wonder what a 62gn green tip AP would do from my 300 SAUM... I think at 4500fps the bullet starts to burn up in the atmosphere... Wonder if the copper jacket would act as a sacrificial (heat shield) and protect the steel core...
I bet it would look pretty neat on high speed film... Especially hitting something...
Had that problem with had loads on the 22-250 was working up loads and running them through the cono and could not get a reading. :pinch: Come to find out the were spinning themselfs into little bits and pieces before the cono could get a reading :rotfl: :rotfl: Thanks for all the info SOC

Wonder if a pure copper bullet would become a self forging fragment at those speeds, similar to what is used in area wide anti armor munitions. It would be interesting to see the effect on 1/4 inch steel plate.
