I am glad to have found this forum. Has good info on AR10s. Just purchased an AR10 and shot it today for the first time. Used some of my previous loads for a Rem 700. Plan to use my AR-10 mostly for hunting. Hunt primarily in Wyoming and Texas.
I reload most of my hunting and shooting ammo.

I'm currently looking at various AR10 platforms and rating them by price and advertised accuracy. I initially looked at the Armalite AR10 and AR10 SASS. Also the RRA LAR 8, and the Larue tactical OBR and finally the Knights Armament SR25. I've basically ruled out the Larue and Knights armament because of price.
I've found that accuracy gets better as the price goes up. The least expensive AR10 claims 1.5-2" MOA Accuracy, while the Knights Armament says ".5 MOA attainable. What do they mean by attainable?? anyway does'nt matter I can't afford the SR25 anyway. However the LAR 8 claims a 1" MOA, same as the AR10 SASS. It's looking like the best rifle in my price range might be the RRA. I like RRA I have an LAR15 that I like very much. I came into this with the basic assumption that Armalite made a better AR10. Maybe thats not the case.

I have a basic flat top Armalite with 20 inch barrel and regularly see 1 moa groups with any factory ammo I've tried. Besides me, my 70 year old father and 12 year old nephew get the same results from the rifle. I don't have expensive optics and haven't added anything but a cheap bi-pod, the accuracy is all Armalites doing! Of course I can't vouch for every Armalite rifle but mine shows their 1.5-2 moa guarantee on the base rifle to be very conservative. I LOVE MY ARMALITE!

I was initially going to buy an RRA LAR-8 Elite Operator.
I even put a deposit down.
I went back to the shop a month later and both the LAR-8 and an Armalite AR-10 were there on the rack side by side.
I asked to compare the two and it seemed to me that the LAR-8 was way heavier.
This was an issue to me because, of the likely need to hike a good distance with my rifle on any hunt.
Don't get me wrong please.
I'm not knocking the LAR-8.
I was going to buy it after all.
I just felt that the Armalite was a better fit for me.
BTW, Congratulations on buying a serious rifle and welcome to the forum!

You are right about the weight. Public land hunting in Wyoming for antelope is really not very walking intensive and the hunting in Texas is mostly from blinds so except for the short walks the weight is not a major consideration. I picked this rifle specifically for its Wilson air gauge and hand lapped barrel.

Thank you, I've been shooting .308 for a while now. I have a Springfield armory M1A. I belong to a gun club here that has a 600 yd range. I'm getting into shooting 600 yd matches. I've been using my M1A with iron sights so far. I'd like to have another 308 with a scope to shoot some matches with. Also, I don't think it's likely but if Obama gets re-elected the dems will go after the guns in his second term. If not the guns the ammo. BTW I'm taking another look at Armalite!

Thanks for the input, I'm re-thinking the Armalite. I have a RRA LAR 15, I'd like to have an Armalite. I don't hear too many negative comments about the Armalite or the RRA. And I'm a little leary about the bolt release at the bottom of the magwell on the RRA. Nothing wrong with it, I just don't get why they did it that way.

The LAR-8 uses FAL mags. The mag release on an FAL is in a similar location as the LAR-8. I would imagine RRA did it that way to keep from having to modify the mag.
