Just purchased an Armalite AR-10 AR(T)BNF and found the breakin period time consuming but hopefully worth it. Mounted a Eotech EXPS3-2 optic on top. I will need to mount a scope in front of the Eotech for long-range shooting beyond 100 to 400 yards. Am looking for suggestions as they all will be helpful. Thanks for a good forum.
Check out Nightforce (the 2.5-10 x 32) or Valdada (the 2- 12 x 32). But, you can't mount any scope in front of your EO Tech. You need to take it off and mount the scope. I strongly recommend some sort of QD mount to make this painless and quick.
I just purchased the same AR-10T. I mounted a Leopold VX-3, 6.5-20x50 and love it. For the long range shots you mentioned, 400 yds, I'd recommend as much light gathering and magnification as you can afford. I don't think you would be happy with a 32mm objective for long distance shooting especially in early morning or late evening low light conditions.
Second, Leopold has a scope mount to mount 2 sights simultaniously. You can mount both a reddot/prism sight at 45 degrees to the side of your 6.5-20x50 scope on the same scope mount. This will permit quick transition from far range to close range without changing scope mounts.
I first mounted a 2.5-10x40 Tasco on it, but didn,t like the clarity nor level of magnification for distance shooting. So, I went with the 6.5-20x50. Much better optics IMO.
My Army rifle M110 has a Leupole MK4 3.5x10x40 on it. Very good scope. Knight Armament makes that rifle and we were engaging human size targets at 900. I didnt want to spend the money on the Knight for my personal weapon so I went with the Armalite and spent the rest of the money on the Schmidt and Bender PM2. It is the most awsome tube of light gathering precesion optics I have ever looked through.
Currently I have an AR-10 (7.62 NATO) on order from a local gun shop. I've got a fair bit of experience with the 223 AR rifles but none with the 7.62 and almost no experience with any true scopes. I've got an NCStar on my AR-15, but I'm not thrilled with the quality. Do you have any recommendations on a decent quality but reasonably priced scope for the AR-10? Reading some of the messages I was guessing at something like a 3.5x10x40 or 6.5-20x50.
I'm learning as I go...
Thanks
G.
Besides the magnifiction and clarity of your scope, you also need to pay close attention to eye relief, especially for the higher magnification scopes. Inadequate eye relief was the biggest drawback of the Tasco scope I replaced with the Leupold. At 10X magnification, the Tasco was difficult to see the entire objective. It was blacked out most of the time when I threw the rifle up to my shoulder at 10X. I had to keep moving my head around a lot to get a full view. No problem with this at 20X on the Leupold.
Also, besides choosing a scope, you need to consider what rings to use. I used the high Burris rings that have 3 screws holding the rings which I feel holds the scope better, but I don't have any proof of that. I first mounted medium high rings and they were too low. The high rings work much better for me.
LaRue mounts are the best...although I have been eying the American Defense mounts...but the LR are what I have...they have a near perfect return to zero rating...

LaRue, that's good to know. I have had very good luck with the Burris mounts also returning to a near perfect zero. I push and hold the Burris mount forward on the Picatinny rail while torqueing them to 65 inch pounds. So far, I have not had to touch the turrets after removing the scope and then remounting it. I'm shooting a consistent half-inch group at 100 yds with it.
