New to shooting in general

Hello everyone, My name is Gary Rice and I have recently enlisted in the United states Navy. I'm going in as an E-3 (due to college credits) and have recently grown fond of shooting. Now I've only been a few times with my Dad, who is retired Army, but I've really enjoyed myself and find myself very fortunate to have a mentor who knows so much about the subject.

Now I have a topics off the top of my head which stand out to me, and would greatly appreciate any help and knowledge on the matters.

I've done my research and while I used to be particularly fond of the M1A rifles (particularly the socom versions) I have found myself more and more admiring the AR-10/AR-15 rifles. I know each have their own fan base and I have ultimately decided on the AR-10/15's. The only problem is I have minor inquires on them.

From the information I've gathered the differences between the two are: AR-10's were made specifically to shoot a .308 round and then deemed inefficient for the military (because of ammo capacity issues) so they made the AR-15 to shoot a .223 for lighter rounds and more efficient traveling. Now I'm assuming these are not the only differences between the two models and was curious as to weather or not I could purchase something like the: Magpul PRS Precision rifle stock (intended for the AR-10) and be able to equip it to an AR-15 if I decided to go with the AR-15? or will have to buy accessories particularly made for the AR-15.

sorry about the essay and if my question seemed rather unintelligent but any help would be greatly appreciated and am looking forward to learning as much as possible before my purchase.

that should be no problem. I think the only difference is the leingth of the stock for the chargeing handle. You need a longer stock for the .308

First off, welcome to the site....I think you will find a wide array of input on this subject and hopefully find the answer that you are looking for...
OK down to business, as for the stocks, such as the one mentioned, you have to order them for their particular rifle...you can fit a 15 stock on a 10, but it is real ugly.......
As for the part that interchange, there are a few but for the most part....they are different animals...
You will find that finding accessories for the AR-15 platform is much easier than for the AR-10, and with the 10, in some cases, the parts are for particular types, manufactures, that being said, I hope this does not dissuade you from going with the AR-10.
The calibers themselves each have their good and bad points....so if the SOCOM is more to your liking than I would suggest looking into the AR-10....although your CQB abilities are limited, more to the point of over penetration... if you had to use it in a home defense situation, well it may and probably will end up in the neighbors house..maybe....
So you have to decide as to what you want it for and its use...
I hope this helps, and I am sure there will be more input from other members on this....

Hey, new here but not a newb to life. Basically any stock that fits on an AR-15 can fit on a "Ten". You may need to look up "SLASH" and get one of his buffers though. I have a couple "Tens" and more than a couple "15s".

The Mag pulls work fine on the AR10s>

Email for some details if you would like.

This is the answer I was looking for thank you. I did a little bit of digging into the AR-15's in terms of accessory's and it did seem like there was more available. I have my mind set on the .308 and I won't be using it for a home defense for the specific reason you listed, I actually like my current neighbors :P . I plan on mainly using it for longer range target shooting maybe hunting in the future, possibly competition (Once I learn more about it all) but shooting is also something me and my dad now have in common so just to go to the range and empty a few would be fine with me.

And it will be my first purchase and I don't think I need to dump 1.9k - 2k on a socom, especially when I haven't heard really anything bad about the AR-10's and the socom has it's problems from what I've seen.

Gary heres the deal the navy aint a place to learn small arms or to shoot. Don't be dissapointed if you don't fire a round in basic. This is what I hear now. The ammo capacity is a mith. There is more ammo needed in a jungle than open areas. The 223 works good in the jungle where you can and will have an enemy at your arm pits. On a field of battle such as we have today less ammo with a heavier hitter with a longer range works best and then have ammo depots at your egress points prepaired ahead of time. Thats why every M14 that Clinton didn't have cut up is in theater or being reworked to go there. Now the engagement ranges are beyond 600yds if chosen. So were at a period of time when the M4 is lacking. The bottom line is that the guys can stay out of accurate AK range 98% of the time. So switch to the Marines if you want to shoot small arms. But with the Navy you might get to shoot the tommahawk 2000 miles and make the longest shot.
For your stock question the Magpul A10 will fit the 15 fine it has a shorter cheek pc for the longer charging handle length. There is about 40% parts interchangebility in parts on the two rifle systems.MSH

First off I don't want you to get the impression that I don't respect the m1a or any variations of it at all. I really like the look of them and ive even shot my dads a few times. With that being said from what I've read in other peoples experiences they say the AR seems to be more accurate compared to the m1aand say it takes too much TLC to maintain (m1a). I'm sure that experiences are exagerated and what not (it is the internet after all) and of course biased. But I feel if I'm going to dump 1.5k to 2k on a rifle I want the most bang for my buck.

Also i don't plan on joining the navy to shoot, in matter of fact I'm going in as a CTN (Cryptological Technichician for networks) and will be on a computer most of the time. I'm joining the navy because I want to serve my country and I am very passionate and eager to join, and as stated in an earlier post I'm doing this to have something in common with my dad and its something I've currently found an interest in. I hope I'm not sounding rude in any of posts I'm just very uneducated in this new found hobby and would very much like to hear other peoples experiences and opinions on these matters.

Also another question I know this is an ar-10 website specifically, but the CAR-15 is colts version of the AR-15 and I am currently under the impression that the accessories for all ar-15's would fit a Car-15. If this is inaccurate would someone do the honors of setting me straight :D my father has about 4 and said he'd consider letting me take one off his hands as a departing gift for the navy, so I figured this would cut costs considerably :p

Sorry about the the grammar errors currently doing this post from my phone at work :(
