Just beginning to look for a hunting rifle in this category. I'm interested in an accurate, light weight (is that an oxymoron?), AR 10 type platform. So far I'm most interested in the AR10(t) carbine but I'm open to suggestions. I'm an old fart, do most of my hunting in the desert and mountains of So. Az. Lugging around a 10lbs + rifle just isn't as much fun as it used to be. Shots run from really close to 400+ yards so whatever I get has to be able to shoot. Hi to everyone and thanks in advance for all information.
Welcome to the forums sir.
I have an Armalite and absolutely love it.
I know nothing of other rifles, but everyone tells me
I made the right choice. Solid, reliable, accurate.
I'm sure there are others. But I love mine.

I don't have one but every report I hear on AR-10 carbines says they should fit your bill in the accuracy department and the carbine is light, relatively speaking anyway
I'd feel confident going to 400 with a lightweight carbine. consider the army qualifies out to 300m with 5.56 out of a 14.5 barrel & irons. convert that and your sending .308 out an additional 72 yards with 16" barrel. Totally doable. add a fixed 4x or variable 3x-9x optic and you can pack a freezer.
I know a few that built their AR10's around the idea of being as light as possible, fun to shoot and a joy to carry compared to my sass. The skinny barrels do not lend themselves to the same groups, stringing shots as it heats up, but a single to the vitals as capable as any rack grade "hunting" rifle. I've been thinking of going for a lightweight build for a awhile.

Not any more. My son just finished Infantry OSUT and he qual'ed with an M4 and M68 CCO.
The key here is weight. The OP said he didn't want to lug around 10+ pounds of rifle. The T is a nice rifle but the SS bull barrel adds a lot of weight. I submit that an AR10A4 carbine with an AL or carbon fiber FF sleeve and NM trigger would fit the bill. Empty, it'll be ~7.5 pounds. 1.5 pounds for optic and rings (Normally, I prefer - and recommend - a one piece mount, but they do weight more) and that would keep you right at 9-10 lbs loaded.
Try 1981. I turned 18 in basic and the DI's brought a keg of "Blatz Beer". Some of the nastiest, off colored sludge a soldier ever poured down his gullet but for a day, we were livin large and had a banquet fixed for kings of samiches an sludge.
Seems funny thinking about the differences in training and stuff now. I almost went back in just before my 46th birthday. I tried to and passed all of the over 40 stuff easy. Hell, Army standards dictate a 40 yo soldier be able to run 2 miles in 18:40. I was doing 3 wearing a 40 pound weight vest in just under 24. Don't even KNOW what I could do it in without it. I've never run "unencumbered" before. I do a lot of hill climbs with it too which'll kick an old man's ass pretty quick.
Then came the hearing test. Stupid major told me I was lucky to be able to hear my own lawn mower running.
Realizing they weren't going to let me go back in, I told him I could hear his stupidity loud and clear. He didn't laugh...
It would've been tough on my wife and boys but I think it would have been nice to get back into the mix again - even if I was just training young guys to be hard assed SOBs.
I'll leave the sniper range training to you guys though...
yeah turned 31 in basic and was the second oldest old fart in my platoon. we had one that was a couple years on me. I have never been a cardio stud, ever. I can ruck all damn day, but I can't run for shit.
I hear just fine though, as long as it's louder than the ringing.
I told the stupid Major in charge that I was there to kick some ass not to sit around trying to hear hummingbirds fart.
Apparently that ability is important to the desk warrior types though so I was on the bus heading home...
Haven't been able to work out quite the same since they turned me down though and put on 20 lbs I can't seem to get rid of..lol
I think someone telling me that my "country doesn't NEED me anymore" kinda sucked. Took a bite outta me somehow.
I probably never thought I'd have to face it.
I work right next to a reserve base and airstrip and seeing the blackhawks, chinooks and C130s coming and going all the time sure does make me homesick sometimes.
Oh well. I suppose sleeping next to my wife DOES tend to beat nodding off with my face on dirt although somehow, sleeping in a hole in the ground, in retrospect, does have it's merits.
If she saw this post, you can bet I would be afforded that opportunity again quickly...
