I've only been bouncing around here for a couple of days trying to get info for my 1st AR .308 purchase. It seems the consensus is that the Armalite is the way to go. Am I correct in understanding that they take a proprietary mag where as the other makes all take Pmags? Are the Armalite mags hard to find and more expensive?

Yes, the Armalite AR10B family of weapons use armalites adaptation of the M-14/M1A magazine. No, they are not hard to find and can be ordered online. Yes, they do cost more than Pmags, about $3-$5 more.

If the Pmags are your thing, armalite soon will, or already has released, the AR10A which is intended to accommodate the the plastic fantastic. So you can have both.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that Mag-Pul, a company that produces aftermarket magazines that cost about 30 to 50 bucks a pop should be the ones creating a magazine for a weapon that most of us can agree sets the industry standard for it's kind-not to mention pioneered it-instead of the gun company having to produce a weapon that retails in excess of $1,000.00 in order to accommodate the mag...anyone else think that this whole thing is bass-akwards?...did the Obama administration have a hand in this decision or what?

They also have a 25 round magazine, all American Steel! ;)
The costs will end up minimal, except the ammo bill, and you get what you pay for. ArmaLite backs up their stuff, or has for me.

Confession; I'm not a total plastic convert yet but I don't have to carry anything very far now. Back in the day I'm betting the weight would make my call for me. If Armalite is gonna deal with plastic I'm sure it will work.

It's not like any other rifle on the market gets this kind of flak.
I've never heard anyone say M1As are a no go because they don't take mags made for some other, arbitrary weapon . What about HK? everyone should just toss them, since they don't play well with non compatible magazines. Then the whole inch/metric FAL thing, but hey, nobody throwing fits or choosing a different rifle because the mags can't be used with the other guys "standard".

AW heck with it.. I quit. I'm going to toss my P229 in the trash cuz it wont take glock mags. gonna tell my brother to sell his ak since these new pmags wont work with it.

Don't get me wrong here...I'm in no way bashing ArmaLite over a P-Mag not fitting. My point is that Magpul should be catering to the ArmaLite by manufacturing a mag that fits the Armalite rifles, since it is cheaper for both the manufacturer to produce a magazine and the consumer to purchase one, rather than ArmaLite having to pick up the project and design a lower receiver to accept the mag...silly.
My ArmaLite factory mags have never given me any problems, but I would like to try a P-Mag, just for S&Gs..I'd think that Magpul would be interested in tapping that market, since there are a whole bunch of us out there with ArmaLite guns.

You know I have heard this point made over and over. I was knida po at frist to then I found the Armalite web site order a set of five and felt them for Christmas the next year I order five more. Now my birhday is on the way and I think I will just get me five more.

Also yes the ammo cost is up there seach around find what you think is a good deal on ammo and but ya some. I do buy only ammo I can reload and I pick up most of my brass and I pick a weekend where the wife wants to something with her girls friends somewhere like go to a flower show and say have fun honey then I sit down put in a movie and reload as much brass as I have power and bullets.

Have fun guys!!

I didn't think anyone was bashing, least of all you. I guess my miserable bastard humor attempt failed. I do get tired of the mag thing though. I've never seen such a feeble marketing smear take such a hold on people.

.

I could see how they might have problems with Armalites tolerances. That is one of my favorite things, it is a tuned machine, not just some parts from the bin, no offense but if you took offense go take a close look at Armalite.
The Armalite Rep should speak up on this, Other than marketing I don't understand the the plastic thing, but I like metal and especially when it fits right! :)

Pmags (at least the 5.56) are awesome.
I set myself up with Pmags in the sandbox, even gave a bunch to my platoon on Christmas. I got a video we did around here somewhere where we loaded up a pmag & usgi mag and drove over them. frag5 kit+ a crows turret= about a ton+ overweight. The pmag was the only survivor, so we burried it in moon dust and ran it through an M4, reloaded and ran it through a 249. That was the best that 249 ever ran. I still use that very same pmag.

I just don't get why magpul went with the new kids on the block and tried to call that the standard. Must be more to the story behind that decision. Maybe they were betting on the M110 to be a success?
In my opinion, they turned their back on a long standing market, that could have been dual compatible with the M1a's without much effort. But like I have said before, the magazine is not the issue, it is the bad information about armalites magazines that is the problem.
