I recently bought a DPMS 18" fluted in Rem 260. I need all the help I can get with working up loads. I have 4350 powder, Seirra 140 MTK and resizes 243 brass. Any help on seating depth, overall case length and other possible powders. groups very poorly with 43.5 grs now. I have a match coming up so everthing will help.

I don't reload for 260 but I do for 6.5/55 se .of curse not in a AR but I can tell you way has worked for me in 5.56 & 308.
Spend 17$$ on a lee factory crimp and most of my loads for my AR's shrink considerably ,

I know my bolty 6.55/55 loves IMR 4350 but this is with the bullet close to the lands , so doing the crimp worked on giving that extra pressure.

Welcome, I hope you do good on your MATCH.

Did you shoot the brass once after forming it (fireform) then reload and try again? I ask because I like Remington 243 brass as a low cost alternative to 260 brass and my gun shoots it well upon the first firing but much better on the second.

My Armalite AR-10T loves the 140 SMK, no bullet has beaten it yet, .5-.75" groups. My gun like a little slower powder, RL22 has been the best, along with VV N560. I've also had some luck with H4831 and Win 780. I've not had as much luck with H4350, I've tried it behind several bullets (120-140) and can't get much better than 1.5" or so. The velocity is excellent, 42gr behind a 139 Secenar gives me 2710 fps over my chrono, 45gr behind a 120gr A-Max about 2915 fps, any more powder started beating up the brass.

H414 also was very accurate but my gun failed to cycle with it. It also failed to cycle with Win 780 (which I've read is more or less the same powder) before when the gun was new, but ate it up fine 2 weeks ago. The gun may have just needed to be broken in. I ended up with a MOA group with H414 and excellent velocity 2750+, before I knew the gun liked a shorter OAL. I will test this again, it may be worth trying. The load listed on the target was warm, I would reduce it by 10% and work up.

My gun also likes the bullets to "jump" .050 or more, I'm seating my 140 SMK at 2.745" OAL, at 2.800" the bullet touches the rifling. My last load with 4350/139 Secenar was at 2.795" OAL and it was inaccurate and a primer fell out of a case at 44gr at which point I stopped, velocity was 2760 FPS.

Here is my accuracy load which is gentle on brass and safe in my gun if you're interested:

140gr SMK
45gr RL-22
2.745" OAL
CCI BR2 Primer (Remington 9.5 works good as well)
Nosler 260 Rem Brass
Group measures about .6" CTC
Chrono 2630 fps

Hope this helps, and good luck at your match!

AR260 question does the AR in 260 uses the same mags as the 308 and that's why you can seat your pills to the lands or R you single feeding the rounds.

This got REALLY INTERESTING TO ME  you know 260 to me is one of the great rounds for long shooting.
Ok After my 6.5/55 :P

Yes, it uses the same mags as the 308 on the Armalite, I'm sure it would be the same across the board.

I am loading from the magazine, the throat in my gun is just that short. When I first loaded some ammo to the 2.805" (I think) max spec, the loaded round was hard to eject and I found land marks on the bullet. This was true with the Secenar, SMK, Amax, and Nosler Ballistic Tip. I had to back down to 2.795" to be almost touching. That length has never given me great results with any bullets and also gives me pressure signs and kills my brass (which is too expensive to waste).

I also share your sentiments on the 260, I think it is very under-appreciated. If the word got out about how efficient the case is and the ballistic superiority to the 308, 7mm-08, and 243 they would fly off the shelf IMHO. The 6.5mm curse lives on

I've been interested in the 6.5x55, never had one but always thought it was a perfect size case for the 6.5mm bullet. I know lots of competitors use the 260 and 6.5x284 and I might be wrong but it doesn't seem like many use the 6.5x55. I read that since you have to use a long action that people say you might as well use the 6.5x284. But then I've also read the 6.5x284 is a barrel burner and a 260 isn't enough gun. Seems like the Sweede would be a perfect fit :)

That's what I'm here for :)

Its too good not to be popular and I would be sick if it died off like the 264 win. Most non-gun enthusiasts have never even heard of it. One of the manufacturers should do some advertising for it and show the ballistic superiority of the 6.5mm bullets.

I would love to see some targets from your 6.5!

I met a guy at the range 2 weeks ago that was shooting a 243 because he had a bad neck/shoulder and cant handle a lot of recoil but would like something bigger for longer shots, 400-500 yards, deer and antelope hunting. He saw my 260 and thought it would be perfect combo of bullet weight/recoil/trajectory. I told him all about it was but ammo is still hard to find and expensive vs the 243 or 7mm-08, or 308. It didn't phase him but I think a lot of people are turned off when they see the price of a box of ammo, nor can you find it at most stores.

All of this talking about ammo has got me in the mood to load some and try my new can of Hodgdon Hybrid 100V and H414 again in the 260 :)
