This is a bit off topic but I have a question about other guns, if this is to far off please delete it

A question for the masses, a big store is having a sale on Savage Aixis rifles so I am thinking of getting one just because. but not sure about caliber. I currently have my AR10T in .308 and a .303 Jungle Carbine. Of the following choices would help me round out my collection? I will also be reloading for it.
22-250 Rem
223 Rem
243 Win
25-06 Rem
.270 Win
30-06 Spfld
.308 Win
7mm-08 Rem
Is this .223 the same as the 5.56?
Thanks

What are your priorities? Are you wanting something that will shoot lighter faster bullets? I loved my 25-06 for varmints. The .223 will give you a nice selection on ammo. The .270 is a great all-around cartridge. I've been thinking of a bolt action in .308 so I can utilize all my ammo components that I have for my AR-10. Some day I'd like to have one of everything on your list! :usa:

no real priorities but I do like flat fairly long flat trajectory. I thought about the .223 to be on the opposite end of the .308 but not sure, none of them can be to bad at $279 "LOL"

That will be a good choice for ammo selection and prices. At that price maybe you should get two!

My son's deer rifle is a Savage Axis in 30-06. It is an excellent rifle with a guaranteed 1 MOA at 100 yards. Any of those are good cartridges, but the 25-06 is a heck of a good coyote gun. A 30-06 necked down to 25 caliber. Flat shooting and very high velocities. I would lean towards that as 300 Winchester Mag is not an option.

thanks guys, I would imagine the one with the less amount of recoil would be the .223? I might try to get my wife to try it if I can keep the recoil down as these dont have a buffering system?

Keep in mind as a .223 you are limited to that as opposed to 5.56 surplus ammo. If it was a 5.56 you could safely shoot both. Still a good round. Also, what are you using it for?

it will be mostly for target and maybe varmints and coyotes?

isnt the .556 a bit hotter than the .223? I will be reloading my own so if I can get powder i should be able to do it pretty cheap, I can still use the .556 cases cant i?

If you do use 5.56 cases, take a substantial amount of powder off the recommended charge and work up very slowly as 5.56 military cases are most likely thicker, and have less room for powder, and hence will cause higher pressures. As long as you are using .223 dies, you should be okay with chamber fit. I would use small base dies so you are doing a full length resize. If using only in a bolt gun, you won't really need a full length resize for actual 223 brass, but it won't hurt, and I think you would want it for reused 5.56 brass.

so the brass is similar the 7.62x51 by being thicker and might last longer reloading, that is why i want to swage the 7.62 so i don't remove much material from the primer pockets.

also by being a bolt gun it would handle lighter loads and wont have to worry about cycling. well I think anyway??
