Was rather annoyed today when I was discussing rifles with a fellow in a shooting club, and I mentioned I primarily shoot .308, and 7.62x39. He looked away and said I shouldn't mention 7.62x39 because that makes you part of the "yahoo class".
I tried to explain to him that they are common in the community I came from but he wouldn't hear of it.
So I considered the question and I suppose that yes, the AK platform is cheap, the ammo is cheap, and because of this it is likely a platform that is most accessible to "yahoos" and ne'er-do-wells, and certainly I've seen no shortage of foolish youtube videos of people bump firing AKs...
Nevertheless I find the rifle just as valid an option as others for certain aspects of extreme emergency scenario personal or community defense, especially in a community where they are common (and part of the threat environment, like southern border states).
It really irks me that owning one, knowing how to use one properly and *gasp* enjoying it should be counted against a person.
Has anyone else ever encountered something like this with their AK?

I'll probably go back later once I'm more financially well off. Anyways, I had a Romanian GP WASR 10/63 (first rifle ever), then a Saiga 12K, then a Saiga 5.45 converted AK-74. I LOVED those friggin rifles. They were super cheap to shoot, super fun, and super fun. Yes, I said it twice. I remember taking my rifle into a shop to fit for a rifle case and the salesperson actually said, "this bag is too good for that gun."
The way I see it. It's my money, so go f--- yourself. I do what I want. You didn't work 40 hours a week and save up for the guns. You didn't help me with my job, you didn't build my career. I can do as I choose. I would suggest the same for anyone who has ever had some "better than you are" douche tell them their gun isn't good enough.
I live by the mantra, you buy the best that YOU can afford. Not the best that someone else can afford, or the best that someone said was the best.
SiscowetA lot of prejudice, but read a history of the AK family and their impact on the world. No other single firearm has had this kind of impact. Why?...A lot of prejudice, but read a history of the AK family and their impact on the world. No other single firearm has had this kind of impact. Why? Because it does everything it was designed to do. He was on the wrong Sid of the Iron Curtain, bit Mikhal Kalishnakov was a genius.Show more12 years ago

I am a die hard Made In American and have always thought that AR's Rule! But face it, if you are into military weapons, the AK's are Bad Ass! They are down right cool! Then on the flip side. I have to mention another best friend that has retired from Army Special Forces. This guy has seen every theatre of operation since Nam. He loves the AR's but tells me he will never again carry one in combat. Guess what he uses? AK Baby! I like them all but when the SHTF, the general consensus from the experts I have talked to is the AK-47 is the one to use. Like I said, I like them all. I can't make up the truth!Show more10 years ago
